The 6 ½ th President of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, is Michael Lewis???

Mr.Mike Lewis the president of the Haskell's Bank is now the 6 ½ th President of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, really...... Michael Lewis????

Wasn't there student bank audits that were requested in 2008-09 that passed with flying colors? If we trust him to run a $20 million dollar operation ? Oh wait, we don’t think there was an audit. Was there ? Haskell's student bank remains ripe for a good forensic audit and Mr. Mike Lewis, who barely has any degree (education or A Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood ?) would also be in line for one....right????

Of course, on campus we all know that he is the puppet of the good Drs: did the last two real presidents have the goods to fire him ? Maybe but they probably were not backed by central office ? Were they ? So we have, with the departure of Chris Redman, a return to the pre-Swisher years ? We predict two things: one, that the informal interview ? Off campus, by Dr. Chenault with Gill Vigil, right before graduation will NOT be repeated for any other candidates ? And two, that Dr. Wildcat will not apply because “he doesn't want the headache” (translate that into I can’t produce a A Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood, not even an itty bitty one like Mike Lewis ?)

Isn't it a sad day for American Indian students and employees at Haskell when Mike Lewis is deemed the “best” The Bureau of Indian Affairs has to offer an institution with over a 100 year history? Considering his move up through the ranks, we would be surprised if he can spell the word “university” let alone know what it takes to create one??? If you don’t believe us, ask ANY of his direct line subordinates. ANY.....

The Lawrence Journal World persist in having problems getting requested records concerning Haskell Indian Nations University

The Lawrence Journal World persist in having problems getting requested records concerning Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS. “The Lawrence Journal World has filed numerous open records request with several federal agencies seeking the investigative reports mentioned by Haskell. So far, those requests have not been met." Should there be a Freedom of Information Act Investigation into Haskell Indian Nations University as a whole? The Lawrence Journal World is seeking records about athletes grades being changed, but does an investigation need to go further than the athletic department ? Haskellnews commentary has received many e-mails regarding changing of student grades. Most saying the problem goes further than Haskell’s athletic department? Stating non-athletic students whose names were/are removed from the dorm’s eligibly list due to low GPA's are often readmitted to the dorms once their grades were/are changed to a higher grade? The Lawrence Journal World may want to file a Freedom of Information Act for any and all student records that have been changed by all Haskell instructors. Getting a list of readmitted dorm students over the last two years might be a good start along with seeing if Venida Chenault ever approved changing students grades? haskellnews commentary 09/17/2012 Link: Haskell: ‘Corrective actions’ taken on athletics program by Shaun Hittle LJWorld.com September 13, 2012

Mr. Chris Redman President of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS shakes things up.

Things have needed to change at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS for sometime and it looks like Mr. Chris Redman is finally shaking things up. One change that has needed to happen for a very long time is to remove Venida Chenault VPAA from that position. Hopefully her move will turn into a permanent one. It also sounds like Mr. Redman is taking more of the reins in her absence which also needed to happen. Keep up the good work Mr. President.

From Mr. Chris Redman MHR:

Effective Monday, September 17, 2012 Haskell’s Vice President for Academics will be on a new 120 day detail to the Bureau of Indian Education Director’s office in Washington, D.C. Dr.Venida Chenault was requested by Mr. Drapeaux Acting Director of Bureau of Indian Education to assist in Development of Special Projects. During this time the administrative authority for academics will be delegated to Mr. Redman. Mr. Redman will work with all deans and academic departments of programs during Dr. Chenault’s assignment.

To campus Subject: Emergency Hire: As most are aware Mr. Manny King has taken on a new role and responsibilities and is no longer in the registrar’s office. During this time of selecting a new registrar and to ensure the integrity of the office, an emergency hire has been made. The registrar’s position is being advertised at this time and will be filled at the earliest possible date. Ms.Carlene Morris has been hired on an emergency basis as the Haskell registrar and has clear all required security checks please provide your support to Ms. Moore is as she fills this role.

I can do anything; please remember I said “I” was the theme of one talk.

Long ago and far away….well, actually a few years ago and right across town, Karen Swisher, the current president of Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas attempted, one last time, to try to make people out there think Haskell was a university ( or a college ) or something, didn’t she? She set up the interview process for her replacement, which looked, from the outside like a real search process for a real president of a real institution of higher education?

Larry Echohawk may have gotten rid of Stephanie Birdwell-Bighorn, who knew nothing of higher education? but the replacement is a democrat who, in spite of coming from a university where he was a “diversity officer” also knows little of higher education administration?

This past week, candidates for the position of President were to Haskell, were shuttled to the backstage of the auditorium, and allowed to make a presentation to those who were on campus.

An hour of:

I can do anything; please remember I said “I” was the theme of one talk. “This job is mine if I am crazy enough to want it” was the theme of another. Some even know so little of Larry Echohawk and Keith Moore’s practices that they actually thought it was done without the dreaded personnel ‘pre-selection” that all real bureaucrats try to hide, but rarely goes unnoticed.

This is proof positive that these people don’t know how to hire a president, even if we were talking about a real university isn’t it? In a normal search, various constituencies are given the opportunity to listen to presentation, ask questions and interact. It is typically a multiple day process (rather than an hour of show and tell). In a real search, students would be there, alumni would be there, all with separate special interest group meetings and feedback. In lieu of that Haskell employees were sent a notice and told if they wanted to be there, they could be…. no candidate names were included on the notice.

Oh and by the way, the answer to the question about how can an Indian can work at Haskell and not be Indian is really a question of academic misconduct, not an illegal personnel question. It is an ethics question, and again, few are left who understand that either.

If Echohawk or Moore had any intention of Haskell turning into a University, they have a weird way of showing it; since it is obvious they allowed the unethical types to make decisions for them, right? Our vote for President elect goes to Venida Chenault . Will she run things into the ground even more? Well, if she does, she ought to be in charge when that happens, right?

Finally, just to show again that George Tiger’s little friends know so little of ethics and it finally catches up with them, The Navajo Nation has removed Haskell Indian Nations University Board member, Fanny Atticity from her position as a member of the Navajo Board of Regents for behaviors similar to those shown on Haskell’s campus. She remains of course on the Haskell Board of Regents.

Violence and abuse against American Indian women?

Violence and abuse against American Indian women?

Who actually knows more about this than Venida Chenault? If you need an expert on bullying and hate mail campaigns, apparently Haskell Indian Nation University in Lawrence, Kansas has the country's foremost authority?

This weekend Venida travels to Arizona State (her son works in Phoenix so it will be a nice holiday vacation at Haskell's expense..oh, shame on us we thought Haskell was broke )...to share her strategies with others.

Last weekend Dan Wildcat, another Haskell Indian Nations University expert on something other than what he was academically prepared to do, was a speaker at American Indian Higher Education Consortium's ( AIHEC ) forum.

Here Wildcat noted that according to his mentor, Vine Deloria, he (Wildcat) had no point since he had no powerpoint! Thankfully some other government agency was paying for that trip.

Thanks to those of you who provide insightful private comments to us; it keeps us going!

And the next President of Haskell Indian Nations University is ……

And the next President of Haskell Indian Nations University is ……

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) reportedly has a certificate with ten qualified applicants for President of Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas. Of course the best qualified, Chris Redman, is back in Oklahoma City and essentially no one is currently in charge of Haskell. Some insiders belief the Navajo female candidate will soon be named (this would keep resident female applicant from filing any sex discrimination complaint) and others believe long-time Lakota friend to Keith Moore will be hired following the practice of hiring his buddies. Or will Dr. Linda Sue Warner be reassigned back to Haskell? Any of these choices assures the Haskell campus that Venida Chenault (VCEM) is not going to legitimately seize the helm.

In the meantime, Dr. Lionnel Bordeaux has called for a special session on Haskell at American Indian Higher Education Consortium(AIHEC's) upcoming meeting. AIHEC already has a formal resolution to remove Haskell from the BIE, and Dr. Bordeaux-once a Haskell Regent and most recently the convocation speaker for this semester, may be ready to get AIHEC to vote to cancel Haskell's membership, since it and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) are the only tribal colleges that aren't tribally operated and do not legally meet the definition of tribal college.

Tribal college presidents are used to fighting for their institutions, but usually it is against bureaucrats who reflect a tendency to interpret the world in terms of western and especially European or Anglo-American values and experiences and not like Haskell, where the leadership has to put up with a union that proposes to be so native that they don't have to really work, and instructors (there are no Professors) on that campus, who pretend to instruct through internships where students don't have to do anything except yell that they are native and have rights. That, by the way, is worth up to 8 credits.

It would be interesting to see what AIHEC presidents decide to do, especially since Dr. Bordeaux asked Haskell's resident Indian expert, the only non-Indian who gets to decide what goes on there, Dr. Dan Wildcat to make a presentation. What will be telling is what Keith Moore decides since he has made no attempt to fix the real problem at Haskell.

Funding is once again being cut at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.

On Native America Calling:

"Current Events - Funding is once again being cut at Haskell, this time to the peril of several sports teams. But one group is banding together to raise the funds to keep athletics going at Haskell''.

What can we say? Congratulations to Venida Chenault?

Breaking News:Haskell Indian Nations University announces the gutting of its football and volleyball programs.

Breaking News: Haskell Indian Nations University announces the gutting of its football and volleyball programs.

Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, has announced the gutting of its football and volleyball programs beginning next fall.

Could this effectively cut Haskell’s enrollment by a 150 students and signal the end of Haskell’s sports programs altogether?

This comes on the heels of The Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Mr. Larry Echohawk’s announcement on Feb, 9, 2011 that the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools will participate in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Challenge inspired by the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative and commemorating the Let’s Move! one year anniversary. PALA is a six-week long physical fitness challenge managed by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, & Nutrition (PCFSN) and is part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.

This certainly seems to imply that Mr. Larry Echohawk is still out of touch with the Bureau of Indian Affairs schools that he is supposed to be running.

By gutting these programs Haskell will lose some of its best students. These are the students held to standards of The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, these are some of Haskell's most disciplined students, the ones who get up at six a.m. everyday to work out, try and eat right (as much as they can at Curtis) and the ones who win or lose continue to try with no big sponsor name ( lets say like Adidas ) behind them.

Didn’t Haskell’s Board of Regents President George Tiger get to play ball while he was at Haskell? Now he sits idly by and watches sports at Haskell slowly become eliminated.

How can Haskell possibly be called a university after this?

Someone will jump up and down and say it’s a matter of funding. Yet other programs, like the ones Venida Chenault is in charge of fair no better. Don’t those students get credit for protesting for better working conditions for Haskell employees? (While their fellow students are attending one of the biggest moments of their lives..their graduations), attending convocation, protesting for beavers and doing internships that amount to following Dan Wildcat around?

Let’s us help. You can start making some of these cuts and the leave the sports programs alone.

Cut employees, employees, employees and start with the ones who supported getting rid of Haskell’s sports.

Then cut your board get a new one that you don’t have to pay, get rid of Curtis Hall and just give the kids the money used to run that place so that they can actually eat healthy food.

Again, Mr. Larry Echohawk you just keep making Senator Raud Paul’s case for closing The Bureau of Indian Affairs stronger and stronger.

Maybe if Haskell can’t even afford sports, it should no longer seek to exist.

Will Senator Raud Paul close Haskell Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute?

From Senator Raud Paul’s website: “For far too long, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has swindled and mismanaged billions of dollars in Indian trust funds. Former Special Trustee Thomas Slonaker in 2004 testified that the Department of the Interior and the BIA were incapable of reform and were unwilling to hold people accountable for their actions…. Instead of wasting taxpayer funds [by] throwing money into a bureau of corruption and incompetency, eliminate them and allow the tribes to manage their own trust funds independently without government intervention.”

Recently under the watchful eye of the Bureau of Indian Affairs/Education, three new employees were hired at Haskell Indian Nations University. With its current graduate rate (somewhere between one and nine percent) we have to ask is it a school or is it an employment agency?

Here’s great thinking for you. Someone in the Bureau of Indian Education put Venida Chenault in charge (we would laugh if it wasn’t so sad) of Haskell. We were hoping that maybe, just maybe, she would be beamed up onto the U.F.O. with her sister, so far not even the aliens are takers…….

Is Senator Raud Paul right? He certainly could not be proven wrong by the way The Bureau of Indian Affairs/Education is currently running Haskell and Sipi (Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute)( Haskell can’t graduate students, and Sipi isn’t accredited) .

Will Senator Raud Paul close Haskell Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute? If he succeeds in closing the Bureau of Indian Affairs he will.

Senator Rand Paul rallies to shut down The Bureau of Indian Education and The Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The new kid on the block, Senator Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, The toast of the Tea Party, has decided the United States government would be better off not supporting The Bureau of Indian Education,The Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Health Services.

Quite frankly we wish we could oppose him, but seeing the mess that Haskell Indian Nations University is in with it almost non-existence graduation rates and crimes on campus gives us a moment to pause.

"Self-determination and self-governance" does not mean letting the United States Government run your life for you. What has The Buerau of Indian Education done for you at Haskell? Gave you people such as Stephanie Birdwell-Bighorn, Larry Echohawk, Venida Chenault to name a few, who have been no help to you at all while letting others who could have really helped you leave like Dr. Warner, Deb Thompson, Sharon Hallum, Dr. Blackbird, Ted Wright and Ted Junea, just to name a few. They let some of your programs go and even with his shaddy back ground they have continued to let George Tiger head up the board of regents and be around the students.

And poor Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, they just flat out let them lose their accreditation.

The tribes have clearly shown they do a much better job without the governments interference.

The problem goes far beyond just Haskell though. The BIA/BIE and IHS have been run poorly for decades. American Indians are entitled to cut rate care at any IHS facility, just like the cut rate education they are currently receiving at Haskell.

And what The Cobell settlement? American Indians will receive ( if they ever receive it at all ) pennies on the dollars that the government stole from them.

American Indians ( those of you who are not among the elitist few receiving the big bucks from Uncle Sam, like Larry Echohawk) need to raise up join Rand Paul, demand your money, and demand that your tribes take over, everything from Haskell, to IHS. Get rid of The Bureau of Indian Affairs and The Bureau of Indian Education. That would be true "Self-determination and self-governance" Obama failed you.
