No summer school at Haskell Indian Nations University 2010 thanks to Stephanie Birdwell-Bighorn
President Obama is meeting with tribal leaders this week in Washington D.C.
The press release went out to Indian country earlier, but we don't think we'll make the trip.
It will be reported widely and tribal leaders will lobby for economic development and stimulus for their members.
We hope one of them makes the connection between growing economic enterprises and education--that way the proposed realty certificates and training modules that Ms. Birdwell-Bighorn wants to send to Haskell Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute will get a boost.
Stephanie Birdwell-Bighorn has already realigned enough of the budget that there will not be a summer school in 2010.
Who is letting Ms. Birdwell-Bighorn get away with this stuff ? Her Husband?
So we hope you weren't planning to use the credits to graduate. Instead, plan on spending an entire semester and taking another 12 hours toward your certificate. That way, if you have a degree in American Indian Studies, you will at least be able to get a job ( we hope ) when you do finally graduate.

I need to get this straight, is the certificate the same as a diploma at KU?
I think Natives should be yet more vocal, take a page from the black civil rights movement.
All of us should care about what goes on at Haskell.
This blog is a start and I am glad you are writing it.
You can probably guess from my name that I am not Native but I care about others no matter what their ancestry.
Something does need to be done here and soon.

No the certificate program (2 year or under) is a technical degree, that would start Haskell students out on a G3 pay scale which is very low around 9.00 an hour.
A 4 year BA degree would start them out on a much higher pay scale and that would be the same type of degree that KU students start out with.
