Southwest Middle School will host a benefit at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the school gymnasium to raise money for the Maureen Williams Family Fund.
The event, dubbed "Pack the Pound," will feature a boys basketball scrimmage, dance routines by the Southwest cheerleaders and Southwest staff, pep band, door prizes and concessions. Organizers say there will be no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.
Williams is an eighth-grade math teacher at Southwest whose grandson and son-in-law were killed in a vehicle accident in Minnesota in November.
According to a report in the Bismark (N.D.) Tribune, Jack Reich, 43, and his son, Vander, 10, both died killed following a head-on collision near Rochester, Minn. The family was returning to their home near Zap, N.D., from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester where Vander had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor.
