tall thistle

http://worldonline.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/img/blogs/entry_img/2008/Aug/28/bee_thistle.JPGThis is a tall thistle from the Prairie Center. I wish my wife would let me plant them in the yard, but she's been intimidated by all the hullabaloo over musk thistles. These native thistles are great for attracting anything that starts with a B: bees, butterflies, birds, even bears. And darn pretty, too. You can tell the tall thistles because the underside of the leaves are very white.

Oh, Aye...if ye be Irish, then a thistle is life blood. So how about it, is "Mild" from the land of saints and poets, or are you going to ignore the thistles and acquiesce to your wife?

Actually, I've looked in some seed & wildflower catalogs for thistles without success. All my Irish is Scotch-Irish, but the thistle is the national flower of Scotland -- both are beautiful but prickly. Maybe I should yield to the call of my ancestors and see if I can some seed to germinate in my yard this winter.

Nice shot, I was out there today. There are lots of great things in bloom right now!
