Barack Obama - Dictator of United States? Bush: "It would be easier."

American screenwriter and director Woody Allen in an interview with the Spanish language newspaper, "La Vanguardia" stated, “I am pleased with Obama. I think he’s brilliant. The Republican Party should get out of his way and stop trying to hurt him.”

Woody_Allen.png

Woody_Allen.png

How would Allen have the Republican Party "get out of his way and stop trying to hurt [Obama]?” Simple. Allen believes that "it would be good…if he could be a dictator for a few years because he could do a lot of good things quickly."

UPDATE: May 18, 2010

One of the hallmarks of a dictatorship is to nationalize key industries. Thus, Woody Allen is not the first to project the possibility of a dictatorship. US Representative Maxine Waters , during a Congressional hearing with oil executives stated, “And guess what this liberal would be all about? This liberal would be all about socializing — er, uh. [Pauses for several moments] …. would be about … [pause] … basically … taking over, and the government running all of your companies.”

Chris Matthews, on his MSNBC show ”Hardball,” asked why [President] Obama did not go after BP: "Why doesn't the President go in there, nationalize an industry and get the job done for the people?" Matthews than apparently recommended the Chinese approach, "They execute people for this. Major industrial leaders that commit crimes like this."

UPDATE May 19, 2010 - What did Obama say?

UPDATE: May 20, 2010 - Many seem to believe that George Bush's joke about being a dictator is equivalent to the statements made in earnest by Waters, Matthews, and Allen. Therefore, in the interest of fairness, here is Bush's comment.

Well, I guess that goes to show why Woody Allen makes movies and doesn't write policy, now doesn't it? Seriously, since when did Woody Allen become the spokesperson for the Democratic Party?

Do you really think this comedian author actor was being completely serious? I don't. He is certainly intelligent enough to know that what he was suggesting isn't possible.

Also, if looking to comedians to define a party's platform, why just look at what Woody Allen has to say? Can we look at everything Dennis Miller has ever said and suggest that it somehow is viable to what the Republican platform is since he is a conservative? When he says he doesn't care if the earth is too warm in a couple of generations, does this mean Republicans truly don't care for future human life? It must, because Dennis Miller said it!

I voted for Obama. I think he is doing a halfway decent job as President, although I don't agree with everything he has done since elected, and I absolutely believe he will be re-elected in 2012. I'm insulted by comments that suggest those who voted him into office actually want him to be dictator, or that he is the "Chosen One." That is just sore loser talk by those who believe it is okay to be patriotic and believe in American values only when their party is in power. That is the worst kind of patriotism.

Besides, the image of Obama in a dictator's uniform is the kind of garbage Marion used to pull. You can do better than that DIST.

It's not surprising that Democratic comedians feel entitled to be party spokespersons. After all, Al Franken is in the Senate. Maybe they are just jealous. Judging by Franken's poorly thought-out amendment regarding increasing government interference in the credit rating business, it seems that Woody Allen doesn't have a monopoly on bad policy ideas. As for Obama, I think he's a very sincere guy who told America what it wanted to hear during the campaign. Since many Americans didn't research his political roots, they were surprised at what they got. I don't happen to care for his particular view of America, or the world for that matter. But the people will decide in 2012, and it won't matter what you or I believe.

"...the image of Obama in a dictator's uniform..."

No, not a dictator's uniform. That is the uniform of a United States Army Four-Star General. It has the modifications of the Russian hammer and sickle, the Venezuelan coat of arms, and the Cuban coat of arms.

Here is a translation of the relevant part of the "La Vanguardia" article:

    ----------- Machine Translation ----------------
Woody Allen is a "big fan" of the U.S. President, Barack Obama, to the point where you think you should be a dictator for a few years to carry out all his plans. "I'm thrilled with Obama, I think it's great. The Republican Party should get out of their way and stop trying to hurt him," Allen said flatly in an interview with Spanish media at the Festival de Cannes, where he presented outside contest, his latest film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.

In his view, the current U.S. president is "cool" and getting to do good things. So "would be good," he added if it could be a dictator for a few years, because it could make a lot of good things quickly. "

do a little googling on Mad Maxine Waters: I know she's a little hot, in a bag lady sort of way; look at what she's said about the CIA and George W. Beatrice likes to ignore, and lie about, the fact that the loonie left was first to compare Obama to Jesus. she says it is only the right that calls him "the messiah" or "the chosen One." so, apparently dem congressman Cohen (sp?) and Donna Brazile are in "the right?" and she's even commented on my blog from the '08 campaign documenting that Memphis congressman saying "Jesus was a community organizer ..." and literally dozens of labor leaders across the country [just do a google]

    apparently she fergot.

Twenty years ago no one would have thought that the government would take over a large segment of the automobile industry or move towards nationalizing health care.

      1. vertigo (Jesse Crittenden) replies

Really? Because it was 1993 when Clinton suggested nationalizing health care. That was only 17 years ago.

It was in the 70's that the government took over passenger rail from private companies.

It was in 80's that the Resolution Trust Corp, which is owned by the government, took over failing S&Ls.

In 2001 the government took control over airport security from private security companies.

I guess nationalization is NOT something new to our government. We've been doing it for decades.

        1. Did_I_say_that (DIST) replies

          Jesse,

I will stick with my statement. On May 19, 1990 I would never have thought that the US government would take over health care or a large segment of the automobile industry.

Amtrak was formed when the last three railroads offering passenger rail services were about to bankrupt the passenger divisions in order to close them. The government formed a separate corporation that offered common stock to railroads as line-use incentives. Amtrak is a great example of why government should not be involved in private business. Tax payers have to add $1.5 Billion per year to keep it operating. The private businesses were right; it should have been dissolved.

Airport security? There was something that caused the government to take over Airport security. However, as to its success - let's hear from frequent travelers.

My recollection is that the Resolution Trust Corp was activated to liquidate S&Ls that were insolvent - not to run them. Did they actually end up operating S&Ls?

Back to health care. In 1990 I would not have thought it possible. In 1993 I found out that some people thought it was possible and attempted to take it over. Now, in 2010 it has happened.

So, when those on the left say, "that could never happen", forgive me if I am skeptical.

More proof that government should not have interfered. MOPAR had a good run under Lee Iacocca. However, where is the company now? Back to bankruptcy, but for government interference. 24. llama726 (anonymous) says…

No, iamtired, today is one of my days off. Thank you for your concern.

America has elements of socialism, but will never and should never go fully socialist. There isn't a single extreme that holds all the answers. As a government, we should keep our minds open to things that work and adapt to meet the changing times. That means that the market has to be regulated and the problems created by capitalism should be answered, without killing capitalism.

I, like most people in this country, don't think corporations should be able to do and say as they please with their only check being from the market which can't control them. Too many abuses within our government and business world are done for profits. At the same time, we need private enterprise to be the vast majority of our market. There has to be a balance.

Obama has said that he doesn't want the government to have to run businesses. But people don't want to listen to that, it's not sensational enough. To sit here and have a discussion about socialism related to Obama is disingenuous at best.

    1. iamtired (anonymous) replies

But, don't you think you should follow your own advice, "Please leave your houses and get jobs"? Or, do you assume that you are the only one with time away from work?

"To sit here and have a discussion about socialism related to Obama is disingenuous at best."

To have a discussion related to Obama without including socialism would be disingenuous, at best.

"Obama has said that he doesn't want the government to have to run businesses."

However, his actions differ significantly from his words. The man is not what he says, he is what he does.

Instead, Mr. Obama allowed only a single question from the American news media, calling on a reporter from Univision, making it unlikely that he would be asked about Tuesday’s anti-incumbent election results.
Sure enough, Mr. Obama was asked about the Arizona law aimed at stopping illegal immigrants, a law he had already denounced in his opening remarks and was happy to denounce again in response to the question. He did not have to offer his thoughts on the loss of an ally, Senator Arlen Specter, in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary, or on any other topic.
As the event ended and Mr. Obama swiveled to head back into the Oval Office, Mr. Reid tried again and shouted out a question about the elections.
Mr. Obama ignored him. Maybe he meant later in course of the week.”

Bad spin there, Jonas. You know that an ad hominem is a fallacy; you stated a fallacy in order to create prejudice.

"We can discuss facts when you bring facts to the table. All I see here is spun crap."

The blog only provided context and a quote from Woody. The updates did the same. I provided no spin since I made no commentary. The only license I used was the visualization of Obama in a uniform.

Please provide an example of spin from the blog.

              1. jonas_opines (anonymous) replies

BS on any spin. Ad hominem is attacking the source of an argument instead of the argument in order to discredit the argument. Since I was talking about Marion, and you say that you're not Marion, then you're either wrong in calling the fallacy, or you're a liar.

Did Obama blow up the BP oil platform two weeks after he was giving the okay for more offshore oil drilling? Seems like now everyone is harping to halt offshore oil drilling........kind of like how Bush got blamed for blowing up the levies in New Orleans.

BTW - where is the outcry regarding the lack of the Federal Government's response to this oil mishap? If Bush was in office, people would be calling for his head, and he'd be blamed for trying to help out his oil buddies ny not doing anything. How much did BP donate to Obama's campaign again? Was it one week or two for Obama to fly over the slick?

    1. vertigo (Jesse Crittenden) replies

So Obama is supposed to throw on a dive suit and fix the leak himself?

The Coast Guard were the first people on the scene. You know them right? They're a part of the Dept of Transportation... a federal agency. Outside of their response what else can the federal government do?

Just so we're clear a federal agency was the first to respond to the oil rig, the first to start looking for survivors, the first to set up a command center, they started putting barriers up to help contain the oil, they are overseeing BP's cleanup and containment of the slick.

Outside of that there's not much else the feds can do.

      1. Liberty275 (anonymous) replies

Wasn't Bush supposed to command Katrina's storm surge to remain in the gulf?

        1. vertigo (Jesse Crittenden) replies

No he was supposed to direct FEMA to get our citizens out of a hurricane's path. One that we knew was coming well ahead of schedule. Louisiana requested 700 buses from FEMA to evacuate people. They received 100.

Once the levees broke and people were trapped in the city it took two days before rescue operations even started.

I don't blame Bush for FEMAs failures. But had he been more of a leader and pushed, FEMA would have acted on his words instead of their lackadasical response we saw.

The difference between the two? We knew about Katrina ahead of time and failed to prepare.

The oil rig wasn't something we knew was going to occur.

We are going to vote against all incumbents regardless of party. If you can get them out in the primary so much the better.
If we could get rid of sixty to seventy percent of the incumbents, I think even the ones left would get the idea and start to do the right thing, if only to protect their phoney-baloney jobs.

By the way, didn't you get the memo? It is now official: Nothing is Bush's fault.

As all Republicans (or whatever it is that passes for a Republican these days) know, we now understand that Bush may well have been the best President ever. He was the "Decider," but he wasn't a dictator.

Me? I blame Woody Allen. I think he planted the bombs that blew up the oil well.

DIST: "Many seem to believe that George Bush's joke about being a dictator is equivalent to the statements made in earnest by Waters, Matthews, and Allen. Therefore, in the interest of fairness, here is Bush's comment."

First off, fairness? You can't be serious. It would have been an example of fairness if you had done this up front, but not after receiving 100 plus comments and the blog is nearing its end. Second, it is time for a reality check. Waters, Matthews and Allen weren't really speaking in earnest. Nobody was really and truly calling for America to be run by a dictator. They were making a comment that speaks more to their frustration with the Party of "No!" than a desire to be ruled by a dictator. Once we realize this, then we can agree that Bush said a joke that could be considered in the ballpark at least of the ideas espoused by Waters, Matthews and Allen.

From what I can tell, only one of those four people - Waters, Matthews, Allen, Bush - were ever President of the United States, and Obama ain't on the list. Obama never made this kind of joke.

So DIST, why again did you need to trash the current President because of the comments of others? Exactly how is this leading to civil discourse? What are your motivations for trashing our President?

    1. Did_I_say_that (DIST) replies

      Bea,

The original blog (anything before the updates) was simply a report of what Woody Allen said, a picture of Allen, and a picture of President Obama that visualized what Allen had said. There was nothing to "trash the current President".

It was the first commenter that then set the tone for the rest of the comments and updates.

      1. beatrice (anonymous) replies

Riiiiiiiight. Manipulating a photograph of the President so he appears to be wearing the uniform of a dictator isn't trashing the man.

As I said earlier, this is exactly the kind of thing Marion would do.
