Sarah: An Easy Diagnosis
In light of the post-election revelations from the McCain camp regarding Sarah Palin's many indiscretions, I couldn't help but make a preliminary diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the diagnostic classification system used in the United States, as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy." The narcissist is described as turning inward for gratification rather than depending on others and as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power and prestige. Narcissistic personality disorder is closely linked to self-centeredness.DSM CriteriaA pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:--has a grandiose sense of self-importance --is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love --believes that he or she is "special" and unique --requires excessive admiration --has a sense of entitlement --is interpersonally exploitative --lacks empathy --is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her --shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes THAT WILL BE FIVE CENTS, PLEASE.

You can say the exact same thing about Obama or most any other politician or attorney out there. They all have it pretty much. Cannot forget the Hollywood crowd as well, and who did they back? One of their own, of course, Obama. As they say, birds of a feather flock together.Typically their marriages fail as well. Notice how many Hollywood stars have been married multiple times. Now Palin and Obama have been married once, however, I have heard from someone who worked for Obama in Chicago that he puts Bill Clinton to shame when it comes to other ladies. Oh, yeah, Bill Clinton needs to be thrown in there with them, Hillary, pretty much every one of them. Applies to Republicans as well, though they aren't as bad. Look at Biden. Egomaniacal personalities and very difficult to be around.

BigPrune says…”Typically their marriages fail as well. Notice how many Hollywood stars have been married multiple times.”McCain? Sure, Obama has some narcissistic tendencies, but Palin's symptoms are such to effect not only her personal and professional relationships (McCain aides called her a “diva”), but an entire presidential campaign as well.

Politicians in general are bullies.Witchy, your assumptions are based on some anonymous sources telling reporters a story. NPD types never take the blame. Perhaps these anonymous sources had to blame Palin first to get a jump on any Palin criticism coming back at them. Could the sources be her handlers who want to work in the future in someone else's campaign? Highly likely wouldn't you say? It could be said maybe these sources have NPD since they might be the “I don't get mad, I get even types.” We've all run into these types. They are dictatorial types, and take credit for other peoples' work. They NEVER take the blame.

BigPrune, maybe those anonymous sources were quick to blame Palin because she truly deserved it, not to distance themselves from the disastrous McCain/Palin campaign. We'll probably never know their true intentions. Nevertheless, she obviously became a liability contributing to McCain's defeat, and warranting at least *some* internal criticism.

She was only a liability because the press saw her as a threat to their candidate just as all democrats saw her as a threat. She took the wind right out of the sails of the DNC convention, didn't she? Then she got crucified…. It all started with some Desperate Housewives theory that she was really the grandmother of her son, remember. The mainstream media picked up on it and ran with this bogus b.s. story, that led to her daughter. How many negative stories ran about Palin? Far more than any other candidate. Why? Because she has over an 80% approval rating in Alaska and she is a Republican. She definitely has more experience than Obama, yet, the press made it out like she was less qualified than our new president elect and nobody questioned them. Obama was NEVER vetted, yet Palin was, and the press made it out like she was not. It's amazing what people believe after they have had misinformation crammed into their heads on an hourly basis. I actually know an attorney that believes that Palin is grandma of Trig. Unbelievable.

Well said Prune. I cannot believe someone would post a diagnosis from the reports of the media. What a dork. People really don't know who she is and they say she has NPD. The only reason you know who obama is, is because of Oprah.

The treatment of Gov Palin will be forever engrained in my memory as the exact moment that liberals showed how they felt about a strong, independant woman. But only if they vote their side. Now, elitist Republicans are piling on since they see her as a huge threat to the northern elitist candidates they're desperate to get through the primaries, but can't. Ticked off ex-Romney staffers I'll bet. (I liked Mitt too)Expect the demonization of Palin to continue. She connects in the same folksy way that Bush did in 2000 and that scares the hell out of not only most of those in the media, but a faction in the Rebuplican party that is feeling a bit less represented than they believe they should be. I think for a lot of conservatives, we're at a purging stage right about now. If I were a conservative politician, I'd treat those staffers like pariahs.

The “lovable idiot” tactic worked with W. Bush, and look where he's taken our country. Now, it's true that Palin connects to a certain folksy (read: under-educated, bible-beating, heat-packin', snowmobile ridin' rural folk) demographic, but I really doubt the general American electorate would ever elect her—or any other lovable Republican dolts—after George W. Bush.Say what you will about her experience and “connection” to a certain group of people, but you can't deny her ignorance concerning several very crucial topics (foreign policy, geography, science, etc.). Her lack of knowledge is indefensible—our potential president must know world geography. Sarah has A LOT of studying to do if she wants to run on the top of the ticket in '12.

Witchy, see you are just spouting off “(foreign policy, geography, science, etc.)”. How do you know? Don't forget she has the highest approval ratings of any governor in the United States. She couldn't get these high approval ratings without smarts.

That's Palin, no question about it. I heard nothing but smug self-satisfaction throughout that obnoxious convention speech, and I heard the same attitude in more than a few Republicans who thought they had us on the run and panicking in the early weeks of September because of Sarah Barracuda. She was nothing but attitude in her big debut, and that's all she's got going for her now. But for those people who let Rush Limbaugh, Ted Nugent, and other right-wing propagandists do their thinking, attitude is more important than brains and vision. Thank goodness the American people chose elite (but not elitist) candidates this year. We had a President who passed the “have a beer with that guy” test and it didn't work out so well. Nothing wrong with being a hockey mom or field-dressing moose, but when those are sold as national and international leadership virtues, I smell nothing but a big steaming heap of BS.You know what? Sarah Palin was the biggest motivator and the biggest favor we Democrats could have hoped for. She fired up the base, all right—the Democratic Party base, that worked even harder to earn a great victory for the U.S. on 11.04.2008.

And this is why only people licensed to do so are allowed to diagnose. Thanks for the amusing 'analysis' syc, but just because you might be old enough to read a medical textbook, I don't think I'll take your word for it that I might have appendicitis. For 10 bonus points, can anyone say where sycophant erred in applying the DSM diagnosis in this case?

BigPrune says…”….(foreign policy, geography, science, etc.)”. How do you know?”Easy, BigPrune:Foreign policy: She just recently traveled outside the US. At least she can see Russia from the Alaskan shore! Geography: She allegedly didn't know what countries are in NAFTA or that Africa was, in fact, a continent, not a country. Science: Does she believe in evolution? Or heck, does she believe in witches? How old does she think Earth is? What does she have against fruit fly research? “Don't forget she has the highest approval ratings of any governor in the United States. She couldn't get these high approval ratings without smarts.”Yes, she has a high approval rating…in Alaska. When she was on the GOP ticket, her disapproval rating was—eventually—consistently over 50%. I'd say she got these negative ratings because she LACKED the necessary “smarts” and competence to succeed on the national political stage. Granted, she has political savvy, but her general knowledge of national/international politics leaves much to be desired. ––Narcissists refuse to take any blame, right? Palin recently blamed the Bush administration for her loss. McCain humbly took the blame in his concession speech; why can't Sarah admit that she might have played a role in their defeat too?
