In My Yard-So Pink It Hurts
I like pink in small doses...but I couldn't resist this shot today-especially since it was so windy outside that using my macro lens outdoors was a bit problematical.
Now if you want something more soothing, here is a little mystery. What is it a shot of?
Oh and remember the chives from last week?

The middle pic is an iris. Beautiful photos; they're amazing.

Yup you got it…much easier than my little mystery at the end of this post:
http://www2.ljworld.com/weblogs/dangerou…
This indeed is an iris, more specifically the beard of the iris. Supposedly the beard serves as some sort of guide for pollinators. See:
http://www.physik.uni-duesseldorf.de/Bio…
What really tickled me was this image that looks very much like the brightly colored tentacles of certain sea anemones which perhaps also lure animals into reach, only for food rather than as a carrier of pollen.

Lovely, Paul! Do you sell your photos? Do they look this clear and brillant blown up to a large scale?
I want some, I want some.

Gee thanks I'm still learning about all this stuff,
I don't sell my photos…I do want to get a good printer at some point for making nice prints…but that is down the road. All I have is yea standard cheapo ink jet.
Not all my images look great on a large scale. For instance the iris beard photo is cropped out of a larger and otherwise unremarkable shot from the other day and it is fuzzy blown up.
You can click on a photo, which usually takes you to my flickr stream where you can see larger versions of the photo.

We have tons of the praying mantis cases and their subsequent offspring in our yard every year.
Thanks again for posting the photos, they really are beautiful. I like how the macro lens gives such detail, more than I think I could see with my own eyes, especially the iris. I agree, it *does* look like an anemone.

I just love tiny see-through praying mantis! A whole bunch of them together, heading out into the world.
That is one of the most exciting things to see for the first time.
I've only gotten to see them once, as they ascended the side of a house I was working on.
Fortunately, they were just below my chin, and crawling up..so I didn't have to bend over for all the long time I watched them. LOL.
Yes, thanks for the close ups. These old eyes would have a hard time trying to hold one close and focus.
The first shot is so outrageously female.
That's a creeping phlox variety, correct?
(I can't believe my brain is so used that I have to ask if I'm on track.)

I haven't seen a praying mantis case.
Maybe if Dave sees one, or some hatchlings, he'll share.
What is a infant mantis called?
and speaking of bugs..
In England, a “human biting” kind of midge is coming down from Scotland. Normally the winters freeze them out, but the warmer winter has left them breeding in the kajillions, and coming south for more food.
We worry about sea levels rising, etc from global warming.
No worries, 'cuz we'll be eaten alive by insects first!

Multi,
Yes that is creeping phlox. I do like pink phlox. Now I also have some pink hyacinths that I accidentally planted..they were labeled blue or purple. Pink hyacinths don't do anything for me.
The mantis egg case is the mystery picture that I alluded to in an earlier comment. I would love to catch the mantids hatching!
As for insects eating us alive..maybe. If the pythons don't get us first.

Thanks Paul, funny how that it was a previous picture.
I've been looking them up on the net. I haven't found a picture of the tiny ones that I saw, mine were clear as glass, other than the eyes, “bones”.
I did see on this link, some egg cases, flatter, against a piece of wood. I've seen that, but knew not what it was.
Lots of different kinds of mantis out there.

Actually late morning…I didn't particularly like the shot when I took it because the pink is so intense I thought it looked like a fake flower and hadn't posted it to my flickr site previously.
