Reported fraternity burglar captured by police after foot chase near KU campus

Police chased, caught and arrested a University of Kansas student who reportedly was trying to get into sorority and fraternity houses early Thursday morning. Apparently he was on his way out with some golf bags, until police intervened.

Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Edgehill Road — nearby a handful of University of Kansas greek houses — about 1:40 a.m. for a suspicious person trying to enter the residences, Officer Derrick Smith of the Lawrence Police Department said, in an email response to the Journal-World.

When officers arrived, they saw a man walking out of a fraternity house with two golf bags, Smith said.

He ran and an officer chased him, Smith said. He said the suspect fell as he was running down a steep hill, then was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated burglary and interference with law enforcement.

The 21-year-old suspect is a KU student, according to the KU directory, but lives elsewhere off-campus, according to jail records.

Smith said he sustained minor injuries when he fell, and no officers were hurt.
