Police make arrests after indecent exposure calls regarding downtown sidewalk planter, apartment pool

Lawrence police have dealt with a handful of calls involving reports of naked — or at least partially naked — people in public in recent weeks (including two I wrote about here and here). There were a couple more over the weekend.

In the first case, police were dispatched just after 8 a.m. Saturday to the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street where two people were reportedly “possibly engaged in sexual activity” on a sidewalk planter, according to Sgt. Amy Rhoads. The man ended up arrested on a warrant and then became “combative” and hit an officer on the way to the jail, Rhoads said in an email.

Jail records indicate the man, a 28-year-old Lawrence resident, was booked into jail on suspicion of a probation violation plus interfering with law enforcement.

About 1:45 a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Indiana Street, where an intoxicated man had reportedly exposed himself to men and women at a nearby pool, Rhoads said. That pool was the HERE apartments pool, at 1111 Indiana St. near the University of Kansas campus, Rhoads confirmed. Rhoads said that when officers arrived, they saw the man still exposing himself.

The 22-year-old man, whom the KU directory lists as a student, lives a few blocks away from HERE and was booked into jail on suspicion of indecent exposure. Rhoads said he was given a notice to appear in municipal court.
