Two times in the past two days, Lawrence police say they’ve responded to reports of gunshots or suspicious activity and found property struck by bullets in residential neighborhoods.

Just before midnight Wednesday night in North Lawrence, officers went to the 400 block of North Street on a suspicious activity call, Officer Derrick Smith said in an email Thursday. At the scene, officers found spent shell casings near a home with “multiple areas of the residence” damaged by gunshots. No one was hurt, and the investigation is ongoing.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday night, police responded to the 2100 block of Carolina Street, south of Lawrence High, for the sound of gunshots, Officer Drew Fennelly said in an email Wednesday. Officers found a shell casing in the street and damage consistent with a gunshot strike on a vehicle in the driveway of 2133 Carolina St., he said.

Police have responded to reports of gunshots at that residence before, including when the house and another one nearby were hit by bullets last month, Fennelly said. Besides being in the same location, it’s unknown if the new incident is related to prior ones, he said.

“We are actively investigating the incidents that have occurred on this property and in the immediate area,” Fennelly said, “and ask that anyone who has information related to any of the incidents to contact the police department, or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at (785) 843-TIPS.”
