Police chase ends when car crashes west of KU campus

A police pursuit ended when the car being pursued crashed into a concrete sign at Crestline Drive and Bob Billings Parkway, according to Lawrence police. (The entrance to Meadowbrook Apartments is at that location, with the University of Kansas police department across the street.)

The incident began about 12:25 a.m. Sunday, when a Lawrence police officer tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation near 21st and Iowa streets, according to an email Monday morning from Officer Derrick Smith of the Lawrence Police Department. When the vehicle didn’t stop, the officer pursued it to Crestline and Bob Billings, where it crashed into the sign, Smith said.

Smith said the driver and a passenger both reported minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for evaluation. Afterward, the passenger was arrested on a warrant, and the driver was investigated for operating a vehicle under the influence but remained at the hospital following the incident, Smith said.

No one else was hurt in the incident, Smith said.
