University of Kansas students started fall classes this week. But for the carefree week leading up to the first day of school, thousands of students found themselves in Lawrence without a class to crawl out of bed for the next morning.

On the law enforcement side, here’s how that went:

• Lawrence police said last weekend was “extremely busy” in the Oread neighborhood, in particular, with large parties and events at bars in the area. (In the past week or so, I also spotted on the jail booking log a couple of pedestrian under the influence arrests made in that area.)

• Officers handled seven situations involving people passed out from alcohol consumption over the weekend, according to the police department’s weekend roundup posted to social media, “The Fuzz.”

• Officers also responded to five public urination calls over back-to-school weekend. “We remind people the invention of indoor plumbing has been around since the 1600s,” “The Fuzz” admonished. “It may be worth using instead of paying fines and court costs if we catch you.”

• About 4:20 a.m. Sunday in the alley of the 900 block of Tennessee Street, a woman reported that a man with “obvious signs of intoxication” approached her with his genitals exposed and made lewd comments, Lawrence police Officer Drew Fennelly said, in an email. The man walked away, and police did not catch him.

• On campus, KU police cited a minor in possession of alcohol, marijuana and paraphernalia in a dorm room at Templin Residence Hall, according to the KU police online incident report. Notable here is that the incident occurred the evening of Aug. 16, the night before most students were even allowed to move in for the semester.

• KU police also took a report of some graffiti that seemed, at least, to be academically inspired. On Aug. 14 it was reported that on a bathroom stall inside Wescoe Hall, someone had painted the word “math.”
