A few answers to crime and emergency questions you may have been asking

We’ve had a few phone calls, messages and tweets rolling into the newsroom from folks asking for updates on recent crime investigations and information on things they haven’t seen reported. So I figured I’d put together a short list of (hopefully helpful) answers to questions you may have been wondering about:

Armed Robbery: In the early-morning hours of June 6, police said a group of three men, armed with a shotgun, robbed three people in as many southwest Lawrence locations. In of the robberies a dog was shot and killed.

So far police said they have located a small SUV thought to be connected with the case, but no further updates are available.

Police are still actively investigating the case, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Amy Rhoads.

Fire: Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday a fire was reported at 2200 W. 26th St., said Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree. Firefighters arrived on scene and did not find a fire. Rather, the incident was a “smoke scare” caused by clothes placed too close to incense, she said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, Tolefree said.

Accident: Around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday a bicyclist was hit by a vehicle in the 6400 block of Clinton Parkway, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Laurie Powell. The cyclist may have suffered minor injuries.

Further information about the accident was not immediately available, Powell said. It was not clear whether the cyclist was transported to the hospital.

Shooting report: Police received a report of a vehicle that may have been shot at on Thursday, June 16, in the 2400 block of Alabama Street, Powell said. An officer was in the area at the time, but he did not hear a gunshot and after further inspection police “could not determine a shooting occurred,” she said.

Fatal fire: The cause of the March 31 fire at 923 Pennsylvania St. that killed 61-year-old Joe Dotson has not yet been determined, said Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief James King.

The fire was reported that Thursday at 2:49 p.m. Responding firefighters found Dotson partially inside the home. He was pulled away from the house but was declared dead shortly afterward.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still open and leads are being pursued, King said.
