The bow tie has been donned by many an influential figure. From Abraham Lincoln to Col. Sanders and Bill Nye to André 3000, the bow tie is an iconic fashion accessory.

I’d wear one myself, if I understood how to tie it.

Tuesday evening one Lawrence man was arrested during an alleged attempt to steal one of the classic ties, police said.

Don Michael Bannon, 50, was taken to jail on suspicion of theft and interference with the duties of a police officer after an incident at a Lawrence department store involving a bow tie and a cellphone case, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday officers were dispatched to Kohl’s, 3240 Iowa St., for a report of a man who was concealing store merchandise in his pockets, possibly with the intent of shoplifting, McKinley said.

Bannon apparently left the store without paying for the items and was soon approached by police officers and the store’s loss prevention staff, McKinley said, adding that he acted as though he was unaware of why he was being stopped.

As an officer tried to detain him, Bannon struggled and was handcuffed, McKinley said. Afterward a bow tie and cellphone case, which had not been paid for, were recovered and Bannon was booked into the Douglas County Jail, according to police reports.

Further information was not immediately available.
