I’m certainly an accessory lover, but I apparently don’t have anything on two folks accused of shoplifting Thursday from Ross Dress for Less at 3234 Iowa St.

Around 11:45 a.m., a man and woman allegedly entered the store in search of more than just a great buy. Ross employees reported that the two grabbed about 10 purses — valued at about $1,200 total — and ran out the front door without paying, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

When they got to the parking lot, they jumped into a white Pontiac that “possibly had a temporary tag of some sort on the vehicle,” McKinley said. They then left, and headed north.

Store personnel called police, and a responding officer en route to Ross spotted the white car northbound near 25th and Iowa streets, McKinley said. As the car turned east onto 23rd Street, the officer tried to pull the car over.

But as we’ve seen more frequently as of late, the driver allegedly elected to flee police, instead.

The car allegedly blew through a red light at the intersection of 23rd Street and Ousdahl Road and continued east. A reader told me Thursday that his wife saw a white car fly through 23rd and Alabama streets “with LPD close behind.”

But alas, 23rd Street was busy as usual, creating a public safety concern. McKinley said that police had to end the pursuit for safety reasons because of the traffic along the busy road, and the two suspects got away.

As of Thursday evening, the suspects had not been located.

Tuesday, 5:31 p.m.
A similar event — minus the police chase — happened at a neighboring store to Ross just the day before.

According to dispatch notes, at least two people at Kohl’s, 3240 Iowa St., “grabbed numerous items” and fled the store without paying for them, McKinley said.

McKinley said Thursday afternoon that he didn’t know any more details than that about the alleged incident, but I thought that tidbit was interesting since Kohl’s is right next to Ross.

Thursday, 9:28 p.m.

A Lawrence resident apparently minding his or her own business is along 21st Street Terrace near Silicon Avenue when some guy allegedly runs up and exposes himself to the person.

The alleged flasher then runs away, and police are called. Officers were unable to find the suspect.

Thursday, 6:03 p.m.

A woman finds that her vehicle had been burglarized in the 1000 block of New Jersey Street. She calls police and reports that the alleged burglar took a $5 can of pepper spray from her car, Murphree said.

A neighbor at the scene reported that her car had been burglarized as well. Murphree said Friday that the investigation into the incidents is ongoing.

Wednesday, 1:44 a.m.

Police respond to a report of a domestic dispute at a Lawrence hotel. When they get there, they talk to a woman who “appeared impaired” (maybe by some kind of substance) and had “visible signs of injury to her face and knees,” McKinley said.

The woman tells officers a man with whom she had a “domestic relationship” (i.e. married, dating, brother-sister, roommates, etc.) hit her as they were arguing, McKinley said. She was then taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police notice that the man also had visible injuries, McKinley said, and he told police he’d been “attacked” by the woman and had “swelling on his face and a bite mark on his arm.”

Both were arrested on suspicion of domestic battery.

Wednesday, 4:39 p.m.

Police respond to a report of a domestic disturbance in process. Upon arrival, they interview a man and a woman “who were still having a verbal altercation” outside a home, Lawrence police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said.

The man was in a truck with a child and the woman was outside the vehicle, Murphree said. Officers learn that the woman had been allegedly physically assaulted in Eudora, and they refer her to the Eudora Police Department to file a report.

The woman had some minor injuries, but did not want medical treatment, Murphree said. Police determined the truck belonged to both the man and woman and because it was common property, they didn’t release the vehicle to either one “pending further investigation.

The child was given to the woman, and the man and woman went their separate ways, Murphree said.
