Man with rifle, grenades spooks police caller on Halloween

One Lawrencian received a trick instead of a treat on Halloween well before costumed children set out on Lawrence streets to collect their goodies.

Lawrence police responded to a call of suspicious activity with weapons just after 2 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Connecticut, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

When officers got to the scene, they found a scary sight: a man in his 30s walking around in Army fatigues with a rifle slung over his shoulder and numerous grenades strapped to his body, McKinley said.

No, it wasn’t a soldier out to make war on Lawrence – it was a man in his Halloween costume unknowingly spooking weary Lawrencians, McKinley said. The “weapons” and uniform were fake.

Since dressing in costume isn’t a crime, he wasn’t arrested and police let him go, McKinley said.
