Of the six power conferences in college football, only three teams have a worse record than 2-4 Kansas, which has struggled mightily in the last two weeks of a nightmarish season.

Minnesota and Washington State are 1-6, and Duke is 1-5.
It’s been a long season for the Jayhawks, who haven’t been associated with the worst Div. I teams since 2002, when they went 0-8 in Big 12 play.

Since many KU fans appear to be in basketball mode already, I thought of a question that looks ahead a bit to hoops season:

Which team will register its next victory … the KU football team or the KU men’s basketball team?

Sounds a bit crazy, yes. But it could be close.

The men’s hoops team won’t be able to register an official victory (exhibitions don’t count) until Nov. 12 against Longwood. Safe to assume the Jayhawks will win their season opener. Coach Bill Self could employ me as his 5-foot-10, out-of-shape and off-balance shooting guard and KU would still win by 40, even if I played the entire game.

That gives the football team three chances to win before men’s hoops: Saturday at home vs. Texas A&M, Oct. 30 at Iowa State or Nov. 6 at home to Colorado.

Which team are you taking?

I’ll take the football team, despite its miserable start in conference play. You’d have to think coach Turner Gill will win at least one Big 12 game this season. The next three are the most favorable on the schedule.

After Colorado, the Jayhawks travel to Nebraska, play host to Oklahoma State and face Missouri in Kansas City, Mo. Tough three games to close out the year.

We’ll see how it plays out.
