Discuss election results - is your candidate winning?
As we write this, it is 5 p.m. Central Standard Time. The polls on the East Coast close in an hour; in most of Kansas, an hour after that. We're not going to liveblog tonight -- instead, we'll leave that up to you. What do you think of the national results? The statewide results? Is there any chance that , after the election, politicians - or the LJWorld.com commenters - can put aside the polarization and acrimony? Here's your open thread. Discuss away.

I think it is obvious to most everyone that this country has swung way too far to the right as of late. Hopefully tonight's election will help restore some kind of balance of power.
And for the record, I would not want a government full of hard-left democrats either. Either elect centrists or have enough extremists of both persuasions to cancel each other out. That's why we have two parties.

We need to elect people who can work together and who will work to solve the country's problems, not to get re-elected.

I'm cautiously optimistic at Paul Morrison's numbers right now.
LJW staff veterans, perhaps one of you can answer this:
These early numbers that are coming in right now… are they predominantly from the larger, urban areas, or small rural areas?
The big cities probably have newer, better equipment—but more votes to count. And big equipment and computers can go down.
Smaller, rural areas don't have the fancy stuff, but they have fewer votes to count, too.
I ask this because of Morrison's current lead. When Kline beat Biggs four years ago, I remember the breakdown showing that Biggs won in the urban areas, but Kline trounced him out on the farms.
Like I said… I'm **cautiously** optimistic…

I can't stay long, as I've got some journalism-type things to do.
But I can tell you the early returns are from Atchison, Linn, Edwards and Shawnee counties.
But none of those counties is complete, and there are 101 counties in addition to those. Going to be a long night.

Too early to say for sure, but this may be first election in my “voting life” (I've been voting since 1982) that the majority of the candidates I've voted for so far might actually win.
Sebelius - yep. Boyda - looking good so far. Morrison - keep it up, it looks promising. Dennis Phillips over Rocky Fund (my district-KS 50th) amazing enough, a “blue” candidate leading in a reliably “red” district!

I'm not sure what these elections are going to tell us. It seems to me that the Democratic party will indeed pick up several seats in both houses but the Dems that seem to be on a way to a win are not the Nancy Pelosi type Dem. In fact, if Ellsworth from Indiana were running here, I (a right wing nut) would probably give him my vote. This is more of a “anybody but a Republican candidate” but “not toooo much of a Democrat” kind of election.
If I could only find a candidate that was pro-life and cared more about Darfur than Iraq, I would be a happy camper.

Ryun may have had a heck of a kick thirty years ago, but thjat was on the track. Boyda is stomping him with over a third of the vote in. Wow oh wow. Unbelievable. Boyda is no great shakes, but hey, I think it demonstates that the good folks in this state, as well as throughout the nation, are sick and tired of the corruption, incompetence, and extremist philsophy of the Bush administration. Its good to be an American!

From the far right: Nothing so far has shown me that the vote is for Dems as much as against Repubs. Based on the Dems going in, I would say there will be as much or more deadlock in Washington, little will get changed and there will be as much in-fighting between the new conservative Dems and the Pelosi Dems as there has been between the Lincoln Chafee Repubs and the hard right. In a couple of years, we will be right back here looking at a Republican correction. Side note, I can't believe Dems continue to elect Ted K. Not sure why Repubs elect some of their yahoos but…
Locally, Boyda ran a good race and Ryun did not. I voted for Ryun and would have voted for just about any Repub over Boyda because of my experience with her. Kline is probably the worst campaigner I have seen in some time. I believe Tiller is no good and therefore I really struggle with the fact that Morrison took any money from him. I do believe Morrison will be more than competent in the job if he wins.

opinion:
I've always wondered why 'Pubs trot out Pelosi as the personifaction of a liberal House. She's more in line with Bush than the right would lead people to believe. She voted for the Patriot Act, and like President Bush, she supports amnesty for all illegal immigrants. She's far more moderate than the far right tries to portray her.
I can only guess that the 'Pub's vilification of Pelosi is a manifestation of latent gynophobia. Reading Pelosi's wikipedia article, she seems more fit to occupy the White House than the current nut job we have there.

I threw that out as an allegation open to refutation.
Your sarcasm aside, “opinion” what is the REAL reason why right-wingers hate Pelosi so much? If you cannot supply a more substantive answer beyond “she's an ultra-left liberal from San Francisco” I'll stand behind my alleagtion.

I pointed to the idea that Nancy Pelosi is far left on the social issue scale and that the new Dems that are coming in positioned more to the right end of that scale. Do you refute that is where she is positioned? Do you not think that will be a point of friction for the Party?
I cannot speak for other right wing nuts so I am not sure why they feel the way they do about Mrs. Pelosi. I will however say that I have never had a personal conversation with anyone that “hates” her that I am aware of.
Alleging that because I believe she is socially positioned to the left, I have a morbid fear of women, is silly. Additionally, saying that a persons position on social issues is not substantive is demeaning.

YesI will refute the “idea” that Pelosi is “far left” on the social issue scale. Where does that idea come from? Cite your source, please. I will point toward Pelosi's wikipedia article (which in itself is heavily sourced) as my source. Like I said before, she voted in favor of the Patriot Act (not indicative of someone who's on the “far left.” ) I consider myself somewhat moderate for a left-leaning independent (check my profile by clicking on my name for my stance on selected social issues) and after reading about Pelosi, I consider her just a little to the left of me. Certainly not John Kerry left.
I will continue to stand behind my allegation (in fact I will call it an assertation) and since you are anonymous, I will say that you are a fool for toe-ing the right wing mantra that Pelosi is dangerous. You need to start developing thought for yourself, “opinion,” and are hateful of women in power, and you cannot obfuscate it with anonymous verbiage on an Internet forum.

I hope you guys are staying up, it looks like there's a good chance we'll get a Democratic Senate too!
Of course there's going to be a recount in VA, and possibly MO, but the Dems are ahead now in both those races, and in Montana! I'd LMAO if the libertarians sank Jim Talent and cost the Repubs the Senate!
