Rituals

It is that time. The waterfowl season begins this coming Saturday. The other day I had to get out the decoy bag and check drops and weights. Pulled out the waders to make sure there wasn't any spiders in the boots. That ritual of getting the gear ready is always the best. That poor old Labrador of mine liked to turn himself inside out when he saw that. He knows and he is ready. There is something about that process that just gets a guy all worked up and anxious. You got a ritual of preparation?

Oh yeah! With me it's deer hunting. Get the .308 out in September, check all screws, scope (put on a new Leupold this year), clean it again, load up 80 rounds with 150 gr. ballistic tips (60 or so to target practice with, balance to take on the hunt). Get out whatever hunting clothing I will be using, rewash and then spray with scent killer. Check the boots for spiders, also pencils, cat toys and push pins the cat likes to hide in there. Scout my two favorite hunting spots and decide on tree stand, fence line or stalk, but usually that changes when the hunt begins. Mostly I look for a healthy 2 to 4 year old doe, but might try for a mature buck this year. Doubt if Mrs Roe will tolerate a dead animal head hanging over the fireplace though...
