Midge Offered Proposal by Shelter Board

A supportive crowd of about 80 people showed up at the Lawrence Humane Society Tuesday evening armed with questions and received few answers.

Board President Megan Hiebert announced early on that Midge Grinstead, director of the Humane Shelter, had been offered a proposal and was reviewing it.

That in and of itself wasn't enough to appease the group of supporters who wondered why the decision to place Grinstead on leave hadn't been made public immediately.

Grinstead has received overwhelming support from the community during the past few days - once her administrative leave was made public.

I thought it went well. Those who spoke seemed to have a genuine concern for the animals as well as Midge. A couple people were a tad angry. I liked what the man in the grey suit had to say. He said he didn't think he was being clear but i understood what he was saying completely.

truthhurts 4 years, 1 month ago

That's good to hear. My only interactions with her have been very positive and she obviously is very dedicated. Our cats (former residents of the shelter) are happy to hear this as well!

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Well a special treat to your cats tonight! It's too early to celebrate, but let us hope Midge was given a raise. One question I should have asked - was she on a paid administrative leave? If not. She needs to be given her salary plus for the weeks off through no fault of her own.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I was in awe of how well spoken people were and how brave they were to step forward and speak their minds.

There were several issues brought to light that hadn't crossed my mind. Certainly I found it odd that people of the education and background of the majority of the board members wouldn't have had some plan in place as to go about this properly.

They'll be getting something together soon I'm sure.

Until Midge accepts the proposal I won't know if it went well!

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I think midge will return if at all possible. She is dedicated to the shelter and the animals.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

The board is elected by shelter members so I don't think it is possible for the community to boot them.

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

If we can elect them then we should be able to remove them.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I would strongly suggest continuing to donate - I believe that is how you become a member and this would then enable you to vote.

Find out when the vote occurs and do as one person stated at last night's meeting, designate exactly how you want your donation directed and what you won't allow it's use.

Don't stop giving as that hurts the animals and staff. Volunteer and assist in getting the old out and the new in.

Wendy magillicutty 4 years, 1 month ago

so those that give the most money are board members????

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Clogged, board members and members of the Humane Society are two separate things.

It is my understanding that to be a member, on the mailing list, have voting capacity for Board Members, you need to donate to the HS. I'm not sure if there is a minimum. I'll get more specific details and post them.

So become a member, get on the mailing and voting lists, and you play a role in who sits on the Board. Sorry I wasn't more clear earily.

gatekeeper 4 years, 1 month ago

You are correct Rhonda. They mail the ballots come election time to donors.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Thank you, Gate.

I should have additional information soon as I called and asked to be a member. They're mailing me some things.

Were you there last night?

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

Im with you Healthcare, would be glad to have a whole new board that will do something besides attack Midge.

wagsumor1 4 years, 1 month ago

Booting the board is exactly what should happen they are a group that are out of control and need controlled.. the staff at LHS that got caught in the middle of this whole thing were like step kids without a direction. They did there best to remain in the grey zone but i cant imagine the stress...

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I suspect there will be a lot more members of the community becoming member so they can boot them.

Several board members seemed too 'bored' to even be at the meeting. They seriously need to relieve themselves of so much responsibility. The board seemed in disagreement on basic issues such as whether they were all present at preliminary meetings. One would say yes while others were shaking their heads no.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I thought they said they had three meetings on this. I do think the one woman just didn't want to be there. One man brought up liablity issues that I think was relevent.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I agree. I hope he comes on and repeats what he said! Or maybe we'll catch it on the news. They obviously needed to follow guidelines in terms of how she was treated and they didn't seem to from what we're hearing. Which I know is hearsay. :)

I do trust the board though - or the majority of them. It seemed obvious from body language which were on Midge's side. Do you agree?

So why didn't you come say hi?

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I was in the lobby and couldn't get in. I brought two people with me. Both were in the board room and spoke. There was quite a crowd. I did talk with staff out in the lobby too. Even the former investigator was there.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Did you get anything out of the investigator?

Well I hope to meet you sometime. You've been a huge Midge supporter and really kept the topic going. Midge is so loved by this community. I'm in awe of her and humbled by her work

Tune in channel six.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Midge mis a very good person. Her dedication to the lives of the animals is incredible. I wish she had been there. So she could hear how valued she is. Sometimes we forget to tell people. I won't be making that mistake again. When she returns I will tell her every time I see her.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

You and many, many others. I hope she watched the news tonight and got a small feel of who was there, how many and the supportive and defensive tone of the crowd.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Mark was there so I am sure he filled her in. Even if she didn't catch the news it will be online for her to check later. I did stand next to you briefly but the crowd was pretty big. I was impressed with the turnout. A proud moment for the Lawrence community.

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

I was going to attend tonight, but thought it best not to. I doubt I would have been able to not say what is really on my mind to the board. Im sure they gave Midge an option to come back but Im also sure that option has her hands tied with them monitoring every little thing she does. And by doing that it will take time away from work that she does. So now instead of working her butt off for the animals she will now have to add reporting in to the board for everything she does. I would like to know, if anyone has an idea, how we go about getting in a new board of directors? I also wonder how deep of pockets they have, since they have slandered her good name. Its also funny that a lot of people hadnt heard about any of this. I know Sue writes for the JW so could that be why the public wasnt informed about all of this? I even sent a letter to the editor and have never been contacted. From past letters written I have always been contacted about them. But this time I wasnt. So it just makes me wonder more about things. So seems they have accomplished what they wanted. I hope the board is proud of themselves. Those that did the hunting and those that sat by and did nothing. Im really ashamed of all of them. Seems the board doesnt care much about the animal welfare at all, and if thats the case then why are they on the board? Oh wait must be because it makes them feel powerful somehow. Ruin a persons life, ruin the work that has been done, put the animals that have already been discarded at risk. Yup sounds like we really have a wonderful board of directors. Bask in your glory for the moment board of directors, because I hope it is a short lived celebration.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I am sure you would have done just fine at the meeting.

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

I had a tshirt made up supporting Midge. If anyone else would like one let me know and I can pass on the info to you.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Kelli, I'd love more information on the shirts.

Do they say we need more than a smidge of midge. :)

wagsumor1 4 years, 1 month ago

i would love to have a shirt.. how much and where do I get one

bold 4 years, 1 month ago

The allegations that have been brought against Midge are outrageous. For anyone who knows anything about accounting or internal controls, it would be impossible for her to add money to her salary or add hours to someone's timecard without any other staff knowing about it. Why doesn't everyone involved have to take administrative leave? HMMM, seems like a setup. It is impossible to say how much Midge has done at the shelter, and working there is a difficult job for all of the staff. They see more in a week than many of us will see in a lifetime. The board does not know how to run the shelter, nor have they seriously thought about what will happen at the shelter if Midge is no longer there. Who will work in the community to get donations? Who will work to make more laws to protect the animals and the criminals that are cruel to them? Will it be the board? I don't think so. Some of them who know who they are have been posting on these blogs, even when they are supposed to be under a gag order. What does that say about the board. Midge will continue to hold her head up high as she has always done. She is proud of the work she has accomplished, and I am proud of her for it. These people have to live with the decisions they make for the rest of their lives. I hope that Midge makes the right decision for herself and continues to stand up for what she believes in. I will stand beside her as she goes through this challenging timel

igby 4 years, 1 month ago

This shelter is a death camp for dogs and cats. It's not a (NO KILL Shelter) like everyone in Lawrence, thinks.

It's not worthy of tax payer dollars until it's a (NO KILL Shelter).

It's time for change!

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

Igby you need to research your facts. They only put down those that are ill or that are to vicious to adopt. They havent put down animals due to overcrowding since 2000. So please get the facts correct Igby before you make such claims. They use to foster more animals out but due to stricter state guidelines that has been reduced.

gatekeeper 4 years, 1 month ago

You want to know how most no kill shelters are able to claim that? They only let people drop off the most adoptable animals. Check with Animal Haven. They turn away tons of animals because they don't think they'll be adopted quickly. The LHS takes any animal in need, including all the strays that the city picks up. Most cities kill strays after a few days if no one claims them. In Lawrence, they have a place to stay until someone does adopt them.

Got any more stupid comments igby?

sustainabilitysister 4 years, 1 month ago

igby I'm afraid to inform you that "No Kill" Shelters do in fact kill. They kill due to "medical reasons" and "behavioral". Whom they euthanize is subjective. Unfortunately we're not in a position yet where we should have "No Kill" facilities in a location where a traditional facility does not operate. The reason for this is that "No Kill" facilities are usually at capacity and often times are not taking any incoming animals. What this does is cause people that tried 1 time to do the humane thing by taking their unwanted animal to a shelter, to do an inhumane thing often times to dispose of their pet. Please support your local shelter and know that there is a lot to know about "No Kill" facilities. Hoarding is a problem as well.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Thanks for posting your knowledge. As hard is it may be to think some animals are put down, the reality is in some instances there doesn't appear to be another choice.

KelliChurch 4 years, 1 month ago

I had a dealing with Sue Hack several years ago when I sponsored the Mutt n Strutt. I was told only sponsors were allowed to put their info in the bags that are given to the walkers. While at the event another individual who wasnt a sponsor was allowed to put their info in the bag. I wrote a letter to Midge and she forwarded to our then President Sue. The reply I received stated that they wont stop anyone from putting their info or items in the bag. When I brought up the fact that I was told only sponsors were allowed (told this for several years), the reply was "well you got your name on the t-shirt." I informed her that putting info in the bag was more important then a name on the t-shirt and if anyone is allowed to do this then why would someone want to be a sponsor? The person that was putting the items in the bag is now on the board as well. So seems the board changes the rules to benifit them and those they know. God help the shelter and the community if one of these people try and take Midges job.

Jayhawker07 4 years, 1 month ago

Good Stuff! Are you serious, commision and board members can act this way? In Lawrence? No Way??? I am moving!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Maybe it is too early, but in the first sentence you said you were a sponsor. The second only sponsors. Then you asked "why would anyone sponsor?"

I don't know about free advertising, but I would think anyone who sponsored a event such as mutt n strutt would do so for the benefit of the animals served.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I just got off the phone to the HS secretary and for a minimum of $20 you can become a member which puts you on the mailing list and gives one the ability to vote for Board Members. Apparently Board Members retain their status for three years once voted in and can hold their position as Board Member twice.

Please consider becoming a member - twenty dollars isn't much so feel free to send more! Become actively involved and vote for those people you wish to sit on the board. Let your voice HOWL! :)

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Are you sure about those term limits. I was told by a former board member in the lobby that he served 5 three year terms and had to go after that because he had met his limit. That would be 15 years of service.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

No, I'm not sure. The person I spoke with this morning suggested I contact Board President for that info. I haven't had a chance but plan to do so. Those are some long terms!!!

Unreal 4 years, 1 month ago

Sadly, in the 10+ years I've been a member of the Humane Society, I've never really researched the people on the ballot for the board election because I just assumed they were wanting to be on the board because they loved animals and wanted to help them. Boy, was I wrong in that assumption! That won't happen again, I can assure you.

wagsumor1 4 years, 1 month ago

the statement "nothing has changed" is completely untrue. Midge has been there for at least a decade and 1/2 .. walk in the managers shoes for a week.. You will never be the same. NEVER!! It requires a game face, perseverance and grit.. Midge has all three. Call it what you want folks, she is your rare find. Loose her and you have to start from scratch again. Then you will be back in the seventies again so go ahead and review the articles. At this point you may have already lost her. Someone better step up and scream loud. Is anyone listening.. Scream!!!

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

I'd agree the people at last night's meeting agree with you - and many others who weren't made aware of the meeting or were not able to attend.

childhoodsurvivor 4 years, 1 month ago

These are odd allegations for them to bring up to midge..... anyone thought of the possibility that someone else in the community is trying to take over her job? I'm not going to name names but I've heard a lot of gossip about that.

Unreal 4 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, that sounds about right. I've said all along this whole situation stinks to high heaven.

osi 4 years, 1 month ago

I will honestly say Midge was always nice to my face but as a former employee I always wondered if the shelter got city and county money because I know I and a fellow employee were hired on below minimum wage and would not put it past her to force employees to work overtime without pay. By the way I had another issue there too. Both me and the other employee were female and she hired on another male employee above minimum wage. I hope she and her supporters do not retaliate against me or the current employees at the shelter. Minimum wage isn't much and when you gotta live off it, it's hard.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Childhood, yes, there have been several 'allegations' to that affect. Please no names listed as your comment would be pulled and it's unfair since people don't all have the capability to defend themselves.

Osi. Thanks for your added input and insight.

My apologies to Midge. I've been misspelling your last name as Grinsted instead of Grinstead. I guess that alleviates any thoughts that I know you. I believe I've corrected it in the three blogs.

TheYetiSpeaks 4 years, 1 month ago

I don't work at the Humane Society but have been around it for years and have known many, many people that worked there. This working for free thing is utterly and absolutely false....it didn't happen....ever.

childhoodsurvivor 4 years, 1 month ago

ronda miller- thanks for the threat. Even though I made it clear I wasn't going to name names.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I don't believe you were thtreatened so calm down.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

The way you started with 'the spelling of thtreatened scared them off. Lol

Thanks.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

No apology needed. Note: I had misspelled Midge's last name in all three blogs and corrected them today. Spelling, seemingly even with spell check, is an issue for me. Yours was a teeny typo. :)

I have an odd sense of humor.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Either that or I am afflicted with finger stutters.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

That's the first time I've laughed out loud all day! Thanks!

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Hey I just hope I can get some occupational therapy for it. There has got to be a diagnosis for this.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Oh my gosh. Stop it, you're killing me!

I would give you some finger exercises. Play the piano or something. :)

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I donate my piano to the Humane Society for auction. Don't you just love ow that came back around.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

BTW that's another inspirational story about Midge. I was in her office after a silent auction. Her office was filled with leftovers that didn't sell. We were talking about ways to make dollars for the shelter. I remembered going to the drug store as a kid to buy grab bags. They would put like $25.00(retail) worth of goods in a bag and sell them for $10 just to clear out old stock. We liked the surprise element of it all. Then I said "hey you want to raffle off my piano?" Midge was like "Yes!" In talking we figured she could sell tickets for $20-$25 and make a killing.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Well, I thought you were just joking until your last one about the piano came through. You were for real!

She obviously has a very creative mind - as well as the ability to accept those ideas others present too. Equally rare! Thanks, and it is funny how that came around full circle.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

Not a threat and I'm not the one who pulls them, although if I see it happening I'll hit the trigger button. Just letting you know how it will and should work.

osi 4 years, 1 month ago

Since LJWorld deleted the Team Humane Society blog (I guess it got a little too real) I have this to say.I love all the employees at the humane society. The burden they carry so most of us will never be disgusted by poop and/or face animal pain on a daily basis for min wage is so large. After reading the comments on the Team Humane Society blog I feel such pride for the employees there standing up and speaking out. we love animals! We want to care for them and we are happy when they are happy. But please we are people too, just because we are willing to pick up poop doesn't mean we are poop!

SAHM21 4 years, 1 month ago

Does anyone know how long Midge has to decide?

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

Someone did ask "if Midge does not come back will the public be notified" the woman mon the far end said "yes".

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

SAHM, I do not know the answer to your very good question. I don't recall that being asked at the board meeting.

It's a fine one to ask though.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

I didn't think of this at the meeting but it has made me wonder if all of those e-mails that Board members received and then were called on for deleting have replied to those e-mails, yet?

Because when some of them said, "The e-mails weren't deleted," I got the distinct impression that they were lying through their teeth. On the other hand, to be believed, every Board member who heard from a member of the community will be replying, without further delay, to each and every e-mail. That done would be the irrefutable proof needed.

jd 4 years, 1 month ago

How do you know if someone has deleted an email you sent?

gatekeeper 4 years, 1 month ago

When you request a read receipt like I did and then get this message back:

Your message

  To: Deborah0448.Smith@LibertyMutual.com
  Subject:

was deleted without being read on 11/15/2010 2:29 PM.

This board member had her emails forwarded to her work. When I saw this, I sent another email with the subject changed to "Thank You" hoping to get her to read it and then let her know I was not happy she deleted my email without reading it. The reply I got back was:

"This email address routes through my work email address, as you saw in the salutation. I have been having to delete these as they are populating my work email. I am sorry that you mistook my deletion of your email as a lack of interest or concern."

I want to know why she had these forwarded to her work. Work is work. Her service on the board is voluntary and she should have been reading these emails that evening and not deleting them all.

Ronda Miller 4 years, 1 month ago

It may be difficult to reply to them if they deleted them. I guess they could pull them back out of the trash bin. I was very proud of the lady who stepped up and spoke out when it was attempted to fool the public. Nothing like having 'the' person step up to bat about it. I'm afraid I'm not savvy enough to know when mine have been deleted.

And I was confused when the male board member said they'd read as copies because if one board member received it they would forward to all the rest of them. So why did that make it ok to delete them. Wasn't the point of that to have ALL board members read it?

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

E-mail programs have a cc feature, which means Carbon Copy, and so it does make it a plausible statement from that board member. One would reply to the originator of the message which is the first name you'll see.

cc and forward are separate features.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

Some ISP software will tell you if your e-mail was read/not read/deleted, but not all will so sometimes it's your guess, but if you haven't recieved a reply, well, your e-mail probably was deleted.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

If Sam Hill wrote an e-mail to John President and cc'd that same e-mail to John P's. staff then it would be recieved by all, and all would be able to reply to Sam Hill.

Wanted to make that crystal clear.

haggisgirl 4 years, 1 month ago

On the same note, if Sam Hill wrote to John President only and John President merely forwarded Sam Hill's email to his staff, then the staff would "reply" to John President. The staff would only be able to "reply" to Sam Hill if they manually typed in his email address.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

Because the e-mail is forwarded does not alter the e-mail. Any reply is going to go back to Sam Hill, whose URL follows the From: area, i.e. From: (SamHill@yada.hoo) or whatever name and ISP it is. When John President forwards the e-mail he can add his comments to it, but it's still SamHill@yada.hoo's e-mail.

haggisgirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Funny, that's not how it works on my email through Outlook. If John President forwards me Sam's email, if I hit reply, it goes back to the person that sent me the email, John President.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

But I tend to believe that some of the shmucks deleted (at least) some of the e-mails. And the only way they can prove me wrong is if every e-mail is replied to because that will verify that they were not deleted. Moreover, every sender of every e-mail should have their own copy on their own computer in the SENT file.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

Well then John President manually typed his name in the From: box

haggisgirl 4 years, 1 month ago

Its just like those emails that get forwarded to you by "friends" that have been forwarded and forwarded and forwarded. If you hit reply, it will reply to the person who sent it to you, NOT the original person ten pages back that started the email in the first place.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I do know that if you use craigslist that you can use anomymous option but if a person relies it goes straight to the originate=al email addy & if they respond bac to the person it posts the original email. No clue if they lied or not but I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt since my email does not have that feature set up.

haggisgirl 4 years, 1 month ago

I have never used craigslist so I would have to take your word for it. I have only commented on using my sunflower email address through Outlook.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

I don't even know if it applies to this but I do know after the firstparty respond bacak all bets are off. I think thequestion of deletion was with 2 members not all and I think the majority did read the emails though.

Unreal 4 years, 1 month ago

If your theory is right, then that's all the more reason these two board members need to go! I believe a few people are researching KS law to find out how to get rid of board members before their term expires.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

A forwarded e-mail is just a forwarded e-mail. Somebody has moved it on down the line so to speak, but the original writer is always the first name regardless.

IndusRiver 4 years, 1 month ago

Are we talking about cc'd e-mail or forwarded e-mail here?

haggisgirl 4 years, 1 month ago

I have only commented about forwarded emails, never cc'd emails.

Amy Heeter 4 years, 1 month ago

because you can sent only so many cc emails before you need to ccc example when I sent to board members it took two emails to sent to all by cc and ccc

I'm in the process of joining the shelter to become a member. I know many of you have been members for many years. Thanks, arti and others who showed continual support throughout.
