Get Your Kinks Out: Ray Davies at Liberty Hall tonight! March, 15th

My brain did a time jag when my friend told me a couple of weeks back that Ray Davies would be performing at Liberty Hall sometime soon. Familiar sounding, why does that name sound so familiar? Then she followed it up with - Kinks.

That did it. Ever since then, my mind has been researching the songs of that era, that would be sixties for you youngsters, and the sound that was so distinct coming out of England. Between the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, yeah, and the Kinks, we had it so damn good.

So here's the scoop: there are still tickets available for tonight's show at Liberty Hall, which begins at eight, and for all price ranges. If you aren't familiar with Ray Davies, it is high time you started down a path that will bring you to your knees with adoration and idolization.

Oh, yeah! Let's hear what some of your favorite songs were from that era. How about the mid sixties! Let's focus on the Kinks!

    Little Miss Queen of Darkness

    Well I met her accidentally,
    In a little discotheque.
And she acted oh so friendly
To every fella that she met.
And her hair was hanging down,
Like a bright and silken sheet.
    Little miss queen of darkness
    Dancing night and day.
    Little miss queen of darkness
    Dancing, dancing on.

    Although she looked so happy,
There was sadness in her eyes.
    And her curly false eyelashes
    Werent much of a disguise.
And her bright and golden hair,
Was not all that it might seem.
    Little miss queen of darkness
    Dances sadly on.
Yes little miss queen of darkness
    Dancing, dancing on.

    There was something missing
    From her carefree little life,
    And shell never understand you
When youre kissing her good night.
cause the only boy she had
    Went and coolly stepped aside.
And little miss queen of darkness
    Might as well have died.
    Little miss queen of darkness
    Dancing, dancing on.

So, Lonelane; hinting you'd like me to post those links....okay, you are a friend.....:)

I might have been wearing that paisley shirt & bell bottoms when I saw them at Memorial Hall. I'll bet the tickets cost closer to $7 at the time.
This show will be decidedly different since it's Ray Davies solo. But talent is talent so how could you go wrong? I saw him earlier this year on TV on PBS and his solo show was great. He did a mix of Kinks songs and his solo material.

nota, you weren't even born then! ;)

I say, kinks tonight, suffer sore joints tomorrow....forget our age...act like fools...oh, we already do that daily.

I agree with Lonelane though - he'd be worth seeing. I was just told that PBS has been doing an Ed Sullivan revisited and that they're doing some of the great groups he had on. That would be worth watching.

    My personal favorite....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdda-m...

BTW, if they introduce him, he actually pronounces his name like "Davis." See if the emcee actually knows that....

  32. justbegintowrite (Ronda Miller) says…

Very good, Newell, that will be worth listening for. So when he's introduced, wrongly perhaps, the audience will either, what, laugh their bottoms off, or correct!

    Thanks for the link!

"nota, you weren't even born then! ;)"

I saw them at the Spring concert on the campus of the university I attended at the time, in my sophomore year. It cost me $4, and the concert hall was across the street from my dorm.

They weren't the headliners, BTW. They opened for Jean-Luc Ponty (now *there's* an eclectic mix!). The year before JLP had opened for Styx, and the students liked him so much they brought him back as the headliner, with the Kinks opening.

As I said, they were old then.

  36. justbegintowrite (Ronda Miller) says…

Interesting. Thanks for the additional information.

Imagine, four dollars! Wow. It's been a long time since I've paid that price for a name act.

The Kinks didn't continue at their initial pace by any means, on the other hand, Davies seems to be doing quite well for himself. The crowd seems to be having a terrific time!

I won't ask where you were going to school at the time, Nota. Midwest?

  37. notajayhawk (anonymous) says…

Hint - look at my avatar. ;)

  38. justbegintowrite (Ronda Miller) says…

Pogo, did you attend last night's concert?

Everyone should be awake and stumbling through their day by now.

Nota, put my reading specs on! Gottcha! :)

Avatars are so teenie tiny and mostly I'm grateful for that!

nota - hadn't thought of Ponty in many years. Thanks.

Ronda, I'm with Roe. Waterloo Sunset is one great song. It is going to be hard to forgive myself for not gathering the energy to make it to the show. Schula was interested too. Here is one of my favorites:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSciUp...

The Kinks were trademark in their cinicism about modern technology and what it was doing to societyy. Ray Davies is nostalgic, and this is what warms my heart about the Kinks. His sense of humor and humanity don't hurt.

  42. justbegintowrite (Ronda Miller) says…

Camper, great links. I figured you'd be a Davies fan! I'm still hoping those who went to the performance will come on to share their favorite moments.

Next year you'll be geared up and hopefully Davies will appreciate not all of his fans are retired! :). Please make it a Saturday night next time.

Kontum, lonelane says they were never married and that girl knows her stuff. It is too bad though; maybe next time

  43. notajayhawk (anonymous) says…

Hmmm. The title of another blog just reminded me I used to date a dancer who went by the stage name Lola, just because she liked the song.
