Songs With Titles and Lyrics About Women's Empowerment and Strength
Passionatelibra suggested today's song game honoring strong women.
Think of all the songs you know that express how a woman accepts, honors and loves herself. How she has taken a stand, overcome hardship, or realized 'she' isn't the one who needs to change - 'he' is!
Grab your daughters and sons, girlfriends and boyfriends, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers, fathers and mothers. Let's rock to songs that express the love and core nature of women - whether it be loving, strong, sexy, intelligent or nurturing! Most likely it is all of those things and more.
Please include a link to your favorite performer or performance. Do share special memories associated with the song - or any thank you to the wonderful women in your lives!
Thanks, passionatelibra, for a chance to pay tribute to all the role models I've had throughout my life.
Please post one song link and/or title and lyrics at a time to allow others to post. Thanks!

Here are three of my favorites:
Just Fine by Mary J. Blige
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ETfNx…
“Let it go……
Can’t let this thing called love get away from you
Feel free right now, go do what you want to do
Can’t let nobody take it away, from you, from me, from we
No time for moping around, are you kidding?
And no time for negative vibes, cause I’m winning
It’s been a long week, I put in my hardest
Gonna live my life, feels so good to get it right
So I like what I see when I’m looking at me
When I’m walking past the mirror
No stress through the night, at a time in my life
Ain’t worried about if you feel it
Got my head on straight, I got my mind right
I ain't gonna let you kill it
You see I wouldn’t change my life, my life’s just fine.”
****
These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRkovn…
“You keep saying you've got something for me.
something you call love, but confess.
You've been a messin' where you shouldn't have been a messin'
and now someone else is gettin' all your best.
These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.”
****
I am a Queen by India Arie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujGfDT…
“When I look in the mirror the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it's supposed to be
And I know our creator didn't make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes; I'm lovin' what I see
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But, I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a queen
I'm not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be India Arie”

Amanda Shaw - “Pretty Runs Out”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bntlWa7
I'm not my cowboy boots
I'm not my faded jeans
I'm not my hazel eyes
Or what it is you think you see
I'm not the body shop
I'm not these fancy nails
I'm not those high price, glossy shiny details
Read beyond the magazine pages
They don't tell you that a super model ages
Don't you know, that Pretty Runs Out
Watch it go, without a doubt
It was never here forever
That's not what life's about
Cause_Pretty Runs Out
I'm not the latest find
I'm not these pearly whites
I'm not this vintage deal…redheaded highlights
I'm not just skin deep
And I'm not dirt cheap
I like the finer things
But there's so much more to me
Gone tomorrow, what's here today
I bet your Botox, that beauty fades
Don't you know that Pretty Runs Out
Watch it go, without a doubt
It was never here forever
That's not what life's about

Beautiful - Joydrop (I couldn't find the actual music video but here's the song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuOulA…
My daughter and I used to listen to this song over and over. Here are some of the lyrics…
“If I was beautiful like you
Oh the things I would do
Those not so blessed would by crying out murder
And I'd just laugh and get away with it too
Like you do
If I was beautiful like you
I would never be at fault
I'd walk in the rain between the rain drops
Bringing traffic to a halt
But that will never be
That will never never be
Cause I'm not beautiful like you
I'm beautiful like me
Beautiful like me”

meggers (Anonymous) says…
I Am Woman, by Helen Reddy
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
CHORUS
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
CHORUS
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

Had to put this song from 1 of my top 3 female musical heroes on the list.
Wonder (Natalie Merchant)
Doctors have come from distant cities just to see me.
Stand over my bed disbelieving what they're seeing.
They say I must be one of the wonders of god's own creation and as far as they can see
they can offer no explanation.
Newspapers ask intimate questions want confessions,
reach into my head to steal the glory of my story.
They say I must be one of the wonders of god's own creation and as far as they can see
they can offer no explanation.
I believe fate smiled & destiny laughed
as she came to my cradle
“know that this child will be able.”
Laughed as my body she lifted.
“Know this child will be gifted with love, with patience, and with faith. She'll make her way.”
People see me, I'm a challenge to your balance.
I'm over your head. I confound you and astound you
to know I must be one of the wonders of god's own creation. And as far as you can see you can offer me no explanation. I believe fate smiled & destiny laughed as she came to my cradle.”Know that this child will be able.”
Laughed as she came to my mother,
“know this child will not suffer”
laughed as my body she lifted.
“Know this child will be gifted with love, with patience, and with faith she'll make her way”

Another of my top 3 female music heroes, Bonnie Raitt,
“I Will Not Be Broken”
That was then this is now
Found my way back here somehow
Knew you'd have to let me go
Told you once I told you so
Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be…
Someone other than who I am
I will fight to make my stand
Cause what is livin' if I can't live free
What is freedom if I can't be me
Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be…
I won't let you near it
I will let my spirit fly
Fly
High
Oh take me down
Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be…

Okay, Ronda. The other one of my 3 favorite female music heroes has one of my favorite songs for throwing a guy into the river. I thought it was written by Tom Petty until I looked at the credits on his cd that has this song on it. It didn't surprise me at all that it was written by Lucinda Williams.
Not only does this song have great lyrics…It rocks!
All of the songs I have posted are on YouTube. Maybe you'll show me how to put the links out there sometime.
Change The Locks (Lucinda Williams)
I changed the lock on my front door so you can't see me anymore
And you can't come inside my house, and you can't lie down on my couch
I changed the lock on my front door
I changed the number on my phone so you can't call me up at home
And you can't say those things to me that make me fall down on my knees
I changed the number on my phone
I changed the kind of car I drive so you can't see me when I go by
And you can't chase me up the street, and you can't knock me off of my feet
I changed the kind of car I drive
I changed the kind of clothes I wear so you can't see me anywhere
And you can't spot me in a crowd, and you can't call my name out loud
I changed the kind of clothes I wear
I changed the tracks underneath the train so you can't find me again
And you can't trace my path, and you can't hear my laugh
I changed the tracks underneath the train
I changed the name of this town so you can't follow me down
And you can't touch me like before, and you can't make me want you more
I changed the name of this town
I changed the lock on my front door, I changed the number on my phone
I changed the kind of car I drive, I changed the kind of clothes I wear
I changed the tracks underneath the train, I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town

The anthem to my divorce played quite often in my car and kitchen to provide me with strength.
Salt 'N' Pepa Step
I'm your honey-dipper so you say, you know
Then you react and attack every flirt and ho
But oh, no - you gots to go now, bro
To and fro, unh-unh, no more
So just walk out the door and be out like Margetta
I've been through this before, but now I think I better
Kick ya to the curb cuz this hurts, word
You dis and wanna kiss? Now that's absurd
Yo, Spinderella ain't the kind type
to be pulled down, ya know
Before I go out I go blow-for-blow
So tell those hos that sittin' there waitin' by the phone
That they can have you cuz you's gone
All you gotta do is just step-step
Me and you, we're through so just step-step
All you gotta do is just step-step
I hate to be ya
I'm not the one to be gone
You better go out and get someone else, hon
Who can eat your lies when you feed it to her
And take that little thumb when you give me to her
Cuz you was packin' now you're lackin'
You used to be stackin' when you was the mackin'
But that's alright, it's a small thing, a small thing
A two-minute brother, girls, I stress a small thing
Yo, back to the track in the matter
I don't need to see you think you're all of thatta
Regardless of you my purse and pockets will be fatter
I leaved ya flat, I leave ya flat, I left ya flatter
All you gotta do is just step-step
Me and you, we're through so just step-step
All you gotta do is just step-step
I hate to be ya
I wouldn't take ya back if ya paid me
It was so sweet, oh no, I can't believe ya played me
I'll admit you pulled it off kinda well
But guess what? I did it, too, so what the hell?
You reap what you sow, you know, you know how that go
I know you're kinda shocked, but it was you who showed me so
Swallow your pride, take it in, be a man
I understood, now you understand
That the minute you started showing me neglect
Is the same minute I started feeling the effect
Why I held it in I didn't wanna accept
That it could be over just for cheap sex
Experience is what we need to learn from
I know we all made mistakes, but you're a big one
So to the lucky man who's up next
Either treat me right or just step

Donna Mae Mims, the pink lady
October 12, 2009 | 12:06 pm
Donna Mae Mims definitely preferred pink.
Mims, the first woman to win a Sports Car Club of America national championship and a participant in the original “Cannonball Run” that became the subject of a 1981 movie starring Burt Reynolds, liked to drive pink cars and was known as “the Pink Lady.” Mims, 82, died Oct. 6 from complications after a stroke, and following her wishes, her body was seated behind the steering wheel of a 1979 pink Corvette for visitation hours at a funeral home in McMurray, Pa., the funeral director told the Associated Press.
Times columnist Jack Smith wrote about Mims in 1969 when she came to Los Angeles for the annual auto show. She discussed her pre-race rituals.
I psych myself. I remove all my makeup. I think stern. I bristle. I don't talk to anybody. You cannot think nice,” she said. “Chivalry is dead on the racetrack. You're out there only for one thing. To win. Nobody remembers second place.
Mims also was the subject of a 1964 story in The Times. Both times, the headline called her “Pink Lady.”

For more'n 35 years, out here in the boonies, we've been celebrating Zero Population Growth. Why? Ask Loretta Lynn:
The Pill by Loretta Lynn, 1975
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoqErv…
You wined me and dined me when I was your girl
Promised if I`d be your wife you`d show me the world
But all I`ve seen of this old world is a bed and a doctor bill
I`m tearing down your brooder house `cause now I`ve got the pill
All these years I`ve stayed at home while you had all your fun
And every year that`s gone by another baby`s come
There`s gonna be some changes made right here on Nursery Hill
You`ve set this chicken your last time `cause now I`ve got the pill
This old maternity dress I`ve got is going in the garbage
The clothes I`m wearing from now on won`t take up so much yardage
Miniskirts hotpants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I`m making up for all those years since I`ve got the pill
I`m tired of all your crowing how you and your hens play
While holding a couple in my arms another`s on the way
This chicken`s done tore up her nest and I`m ready to make a deal
And you can`t afford to turn it down `cause you know I`ve got the pill
This incubator is overused because you`ve kept it filled
The feeling good comes easy now since I`ve got the pill
It`s getting dark it`s roosting time tonight`s too good to be real
Aw but Daddy don`t you worry none `cause Mama`s got the pill
Oh Daddy don`t you worry none `cause Mama`s got the pill

–
Spinster-Joan Jett/Kathleen Hanna
–
Maybe I don't wanna maybe I don't wanna, wanna
Maybe I don't wanna f**k you!
I'm a spinster, I don't need no rules
I don't got no one tellin' me what to do
Tellin' me what's cool? I'm no stupid fool
Hey teen ageist I'm not over yet
Y-O-U-T-H only, baby, that's your math
I'm a spinster, I don't need your rules
I'm resisting, I don't need no one to
Tell me what's cool or how I need a tool
To get thru to you
I'm no one's wife and' I'm not your little girl
Don't tell me I'm useless cuz I want
More from this world
Maybe I don't wanna maybe I don't wanna, wanna
Maybe I don't wanna maybe I don't wanna
Maybe I don't wanna maybe I don't wanna, wanna
Maybe she don't wanna f**k you!

King Henry
Steelyeye Span
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrsGpP…
Steeleye Span
let never a man wooing wend
that lacketh things three,
a store of gold, an open heart,
and full of charity
and this was seen of king henry
though he lay quite alone,
for he's taken him to a haunted hall
seven miles from the town.
he's chased the deer now him before
and the doe down by the den
till the fattest buck in all the flock
king henry he has slain
his huntsmen followed him to the hall
to make them burly cheer
when loud the wind was heard to sound
and an earthquake rocked the flor
and darkness covered all the hall
where they sat at their meat
the grey dogs, yowling, left their food
and crept to henry's feet
and louder howled the rising wind
and burst the fastened door
and in there came a grisly ghost
stamping on the floor
her head hit the rooftree of the house
her middle you could not span
each frightened huntsmen fled the hall
and left the king alone,
her teeth were like the tether stakes
her nose like club or mell
and nothing less she seemed to be
than a fiend that comes from hell
some meat, some meat you king henry
some meat you give to me
go kill your horse you king henry
and bring him here to me
he's gone and slain his berry brown steed
though it made his heart full sore
for she's eaten up both skin and bone
left nothing but hide and hair
more meat, more meat you king henry
more meat you give to me
go kill your grey-hounds king henry
and bring them here to me
and when he's slain his good grey-hounds
it made his heart full sore
she's eaten up both skin and bone
left nothing but hide and hair.
more meat, more meat you king henry
more meat you give to me,
go fell your goss-hawks king henry
and bring them here to me
and when he's slain his gay goss-hawks,
it made his heart full sore
she's eaten them up both skin and bone
left nothing but feathers bare
some drink, some drink now king henry
some drink you give to me
oh you sew up your horse's hide
and bring in a drink to me;
and he's sewn up the bloody hide,
and a pipe of wine put in,
and she's drank up all in one draught
left never a drop therein.
a bed, a bed now king henry
a bed you'll make for me
oh you must pull the heather green
and make it soft for me
and pulled has he the heather green
and made for her a bed
and taken has he his gay mantle
and o'er it he has spread
take off your clothes now king henry
and lie down by my side
now swear, now swear you king henry
to take me for your bride
oh god forbid, says king henry,
that ever the like betide
that ever a fiend that comes from hell
should stretch down by my side
when the night was gone and the day was come
and the sun shone through the hall
the fairest lady that ever was seen
lay between him and the wall
i've met with many a gentle knight
that gave me such a fill
but never before with a courteous knight
that gave me all my will
