Songs With A Gospel Theme
I have been wanting to do a music blog with a Gospel theme for some time now, and in particular when I heard the terrific performance by Boston's Street Gospel singers at Ten Kennedy's funeral recently. I was reminded of Gospel music again last week when Ralph Gage played a song of a Gospel nature.
Please list your favorite performers, performances, and links to music that rock your soul and open the gateways of heaven for you. It will be a nice change from doomsday and criminal songs of late!
I have never purchased music of a Gospel theme, but I sure enjoy listening to it on those rare occurrences when it was presented to me for whatever reason. Maybe it was divine intervention.
We'll leave it up to you to determine if the song is Gospel, but it could/should include words about being saved, our heavenly Father, or, Jesus, get me to the church on time, etc.

“Down to the River”

These are two of my favorite spirituals that mention God in particular. I just happened to be listening to the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, on September 11, 2001, when I saw the planes hit the Towers on TV. Down to the River to Pray was on. I can not listen to that song without my eyes tearing up.
I could just start a list that would go on forever.

I Saw The Light, Hank Williams
I wandered so aimless life filled with sin
I wouldn't let my dear saviour in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
CHORUS
I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
CHORUS
I was a fool to wander and a-stray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

Counting Blue Cars, Dishwalla
Must of been mid afternoon
I could tell by how far the childs shadow stretched out and
He walked with a purpose
In his sneakers, down the street
He had, many questions
Like children often do
He said,
tell me all your thoughts on god?
tell me am I very far?
Must of been late afternoon
On our way the sun broke free of the clouds
We count only blue cars
Skip the cracks, in the street
And ask many questions
Like children often do
We said,
tell me all your thoughts on god?
cause I would really like to meet her.
And ask her why were who we are.
Tell me all your thoughts on god,
Cause I am on my way to see her.
So tell me am I very far -
Am I very far now?
Its getting cold picked up the pace
How our shoes make hard noises in this place
Our clothes are stained
We pass many, cross eyed people
And ask many questions
Like children often do
tell me all your thoughts on god?
cause I would really like to meet her.
And ask her why were who we are.
Tell me all your thoughts on god?
cause I am on my way to see her.
So tell me am I very far?

God, John Lennon
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I'll say it again,
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I don't believe in magic,
I don't believe in I-ching,
I don't believe in bible,
I don't believe in tarot,
I don't believe in Hitler,
I don't believe in Jesus,
I don't believe in Kennedy,
I don't believe in Buddha,
I don't believe in mantra,
I don't believe in Gita,
I don't believe in yoga,
I don't believe in kings,
I don't believe in Elvis,
I don't believe in Zimmerman,
I don't believe in Beatles,
I just believe in me,
Yoko and me,
And that's reality.
The dream is over,
What can I say?
The dream is over,
Yesterday,
I was dreamweaver,
But now I'm reborn,
I was the walrus,
But now I'm John,
And so dear friends,
You just have to carry on,
The dream is over.

The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

You slipped upon the floor and hit your head

these were the very last words that you said….

“One Step Into The Light” by The Moody Blues
One step into the light
One step away from night
It's the hardest step you're gonna take
The ship to take you there
Is waiting at the head
Of the stairs that lead up through your opened mind
Above the dark despair
Shines a light that we can share
Close your eyes and look up in between your brows
Then slowly breathing in
Feel the life force streaming in
Hold it there, then send it back to him
All the old things are returning
Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our saviour, saviour, saviour, save your soul
The river of living breath
Is flowing through the sun
He was there before the earth began
The world will drag on you
Use his love to pull you through
Find the mission of your life and start to be
All the old things are returning
Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our saviour, saviour, saviour, save your soul
There's one thing I can do
Play my mellotron for you
Try to blow away your city blues
Your dreams are not unfound
Get your feet back on the ground
The truth will set us free, we cannot lose
We cannot lose, we just have to choose

I was “blessed” at Pizza Hut having lunch one day. Someone put the song “High and Mighty” performed by Dolly Parton on the jukebox. Liked it so much I bought the album!
He is high and mighty
He is high and mighty
He is there and ever waiting
Reaching out to you and me
He is high and mighty
Oh, mighty is His power
Mighty is His love
He is high and mighty
He is there with the answers
Let us lift Him up
God loves you, did you know that?
Ain't it good to know he cares
If you're burdened down with troubles
Just go to Him in prayer
Say God, I'm just a seeker
I'm empty, scared and lost
Then lay your burdens down
At the foot of the cross
He said ye shall know the truth
And the truth shall set you free
He will guide and lead you
And fulfill every need
Nothing is impossible
If you have faith enough
So if you've lost direction
Stop and just look up
'Cause He is high and mighty
Ooh, mighty is His power, mighty is His love
He is high and mighty
He is life everlasting
Let us lift Him up
High and mighty
He is high and mighty
I believe, I do believe
That His love has set me free
I believe, I believe, I believe
He is high and mighty
Oh, mighty is His power, mighty is His love
He is high and He's mighty
It's a wonderful feeling
Let us lift Him up
He said if I be lifted up
He said if I be lifted up
What did He say?
He said if I be lifted up
I'll draw all the men unto me
Let's lift him higher, higher
Higher and higher each day
Let's lift Him up
'Cause He is high and He's mighty
And He has washed my sins away
'Cause He's high and He's mighty

Roman, what a funny example of seeing the light - at Pizza Hut no less. Just goes to show it can happen at any time, any place if you are hungry enough for it.

Smitty, terrific choices. I know what I'll be listening to once I get a chance this evening.
Thanks for the links, Kathy, I'll check these lists out.
