Songs With the Name of A State or City In Their Title or Lyrics
Schula and I were recently discussing how many songs have either the name of a state or a city in the title or in the lyrics. So today's song title game is about states and cities.
Rules of the game: Please post a link to your song - if it is not available then copy lyrics to "prove" that the state or city name appears in the song.
The song you post must have a state 's or city's name in either the title of the song, or in the lyric.
Have fun....the rest of us might get a clue about your interests, where you vacation, the type of music you enjoy listening to, your hometown, or even where you presently live!
The first song that comes to my mind is, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" not because I did, but because as I child I enjoyed changing the lyrics. Here is the way I enjoyed singing it.
I left my heart
In a pan of Crisco
High on a stove
It cooks for me......
So you get the idea! Feel free to tell us what the song means to you, - a special vacation, romance, etc.

“A Rainy Night in Georgia”
Hoverin' by my suitcase, tryin' to find a warm place to spend the night
Heavy rain fallin', seems I hear your voice callin' “It's all right.”
A rainy night in Georgia, a rainy night in Georgia
It seems like it's rainin' all over the world
I feel like it's rainin' all over the world
Neon signs a-flashin', taxi cabs and buses passin' through the night
A distant moanin' of a train seems to play a sad refrain to the night
A rainy night in Georgia, such a rainy night in Georgia
Lord, I believe it's rainin' all over the world
I feel like it's rainin' all over the world

Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood
If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American where as least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:
I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A

If a song talked about the Midwest would that count? If so…
Straylight Run - With God On Our Side
I believe it was originated with Bob Dylan but I prefer Straylight Run's version.
Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.
Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.
I've learned to hate others
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And except it all bravely
With God on my side
Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.
When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they died
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.
But now we got weapons
Of chemical dust
If fight them we're forced to
Then fight them we must
One push of the button
It shocked the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.
In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
My words fill they air
They fall to the floor
That if God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

Straylight Run - Take It To Manhattan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p22kc7…
Take it to Manhattan because I don't want it
Sell it to someone who can't live without it
You made it for the masses
It passed unnoticed
Dead somewhere in Kansas
Now I've had it up to here
I've had enough of all these songs of self imposed unhappiness
Say it for myself like I always wanted
Something to believe when you've always doubted
There was some logic
Some line of reason that brought us to this place
But now I've had it up to here
I've had enough of all of these songs of self imposed unhappiness

Jason Aldean “She's Country” - mentions South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Kansas.
You boys ever met a real country girl?
Talkin, true blue, out in the woods, down home country
She's a hot little number in her pick-up truck
Daddy's sweet money done jacked it up
She's a party-all-nighter from South Carolina, a bad mama jama from down in Alabama
She's a ragin' cajun, a lunatic from Brunswick, juicy Georgia peach
With a thick southern drawl, sexy swingin' walk, brother she's all
Country, (shoot) from her cowboy boots to her down home roots
She's country, from the songs she plays to the prayers she prays,
That's the way she was born and raised, she ain't afraid to stay, country
Brother she's country
A hell raisin sugar when the sun goes down, mama taught her how to rip up the town
honey drippin honey from the holler in Kentucky, getcha flippin kinda trippy like a Mississippi hippie,
She's a Kansas princess, crazy mother trucker, undercover lover
Thick southern drawl, sexy swingin' walk,
Brother she's all
Country (shoot) from her cowboy boots to her down home roots
She's country, from the songs she plays to the prayers she prays,
That's the way she was born and raised, she ain't afraid to stay, country
Nothin but country
(thick southern drawl)
(sexy swinging walk)
(aw show 'em how a country girl does it one time now)
Brother she's country, from her
cowboy boots to her down home roots
Nothin but country
hell yeaaa yeahh
She's country (shoot) from her cowboy boots to her down home roots
She's country, from the songs she plays to the prayers she prays,
That's the way she was born and raised she ain't afraid to stay, country
Yea she's nothing but country
She's all about the country
From the backwoods she's a homegrown, down to the bone, she's country

Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Huey Lewis - “Heart of Rock and Roll”
New York, New York is everything they say
And no place that I'd rather be
Where else can you do a half a million things
And all at a quarter to three
When they play their music, ooh that modern music
They like it with a lot of style
But it's still that same old back beat rhythm
That really drives them wild
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beatin'
And from what I've seen I believe 'em
Now the old boy may be barely breathin'
But the heart of rock and roll, heart of rock and roll is still beatin'
L.A., Hollywood and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty, pretty girls
All dressed so scantily
When they play their music, that hard rock music
They like it with a lot of flash
But it's still that same old back beat rhythm
That really kicks 'em in the
D.C., San Antone and the Liberty Town
Boston and Baton Rouge
Tulsa, Austin, Oklahoma City,
Seattle, San Francisco, too
Everywhere there's music, real live music
Bands with a million styles
But it's still that same old rock and roll music
That really, really drives 'em wild

George Strait - “I can't see Texas from here”
written by George Strait himself.
I come and go as I please
From down here, up north and in between
But baby it's a shame, 'cause I always feel the same
When I can't see Texas from here
I can't see Texas from here
No matter how I try, it makes me wanna die
So if you see me looking down, I'm trying not to show this frown
'Cause I can't see Texas from here
I can't say I don't like Tennessee
The people here have all been good to me
So please don't take offense if start to get intense
It's just 'cause I can't see Texas from here
I can't see Texas from here
No matter how I try, it makes me wanna die
So if you see me looking down, I'm trying not to show this frown

All my ex's live in Texas,
And Texas is a place I'd dearly love to be.
But all my ex's live in Texas
And that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.
Rosanna's down in Texarkana; wanted me to push her broom,
And sweet Ilene's in Abilene; she forgot I hung the moon,
And Allison in Galveston somehow lost her sanity,
And Dimples who now lives in Temple's got the law lookin’ for me.
Chorus:
All my ex's live in Texas,
And Texas is a place I'd dearly love to be.
But all my ex's live in Texas
And that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.
I remember that old Frio river where I learned to swim.
And it brings to mind another time where I wore my welcome thin.
My transcendental meditation, I go there each night,
But I always come back to myself long before daylight.
Chorus:
All my ex's live in Texas,
And Texas is a place I'd dearly love to be.
But all my ex's live in Texas
And that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.
Some folks think I'm hidin',
It's been rumored that I died,
But I'm alive and well in Tennessee.

nothing but time
(by Jackson Browne & Howard Burke)
Rolling down 295 out of Portland, Maine
Still high from the people up there and feeling no pain
Gonna make it to New Jersey, gonna set it up and do it again
I got a bottle of wine (pass it over)
I got a broken white line (I'm still sober)
There ain't nothin but time between this Silver Eagle
And that New Jersey line
Well it's a rock and roll band or a movie you can take your pick
And it ain't bad work if you can get it
But you gotta make it stick
But getting any kind of sleep on this rolling motel—that's the trick
It's just a bottle of wine (pass it over)
It's just a broken white line (I'm still sober)
It's just a whole lot of time in the twilight zone
Between me and these friends of mine

Maine
“Maine Stein Song”
Fill the steins to dear old Maine!
Shout 'til the rafters ring!
Stand and drink the toast once again!
Let ev'ry loyal Maine man sing,
Drink to all the happy hours,
Drink to the careless days!
Drink to Maine, our Alma Mater
The college of our hearts always.
To the trees, To the sky,
To the Spring in its glorious happiness!
To the youth, To the fire,
To the life that is moving and calling us!
To the Gods, To the Fates,
To the Rulers of men and their destinies!
To the lips, To the eyes,
To the girls who will love us some day!
Fill the steins to dear old Maine!
Shout 'til the rafters ring!
Stand and drink the toast once again!
Let ev'ry loyal Maine man sing,
Drink to all the happy hours,
Drink to the careless days!
Drink to Maine, our Alma Mater
The college of our hearts always.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band › Rocky Top
Wish that I was on ole rocky top,
Down in the tennessee hills.
Aint no smoggy smoke on rocky top,
Aint no telephone bills.
Once there was a girl on rocky top,
Half bear the other half cat.
Wild as a mink, sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that.
Rocky top, youll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.
Once two strangers climbed on rocky top,
Lookin for a moonshine still.
Strangers aint come back from rocky top,
Guess they never will.
Corn wont grow at all on rocky top,
Dirts too rocky by far.
Thats why all the folks on rocky top
Get their corn from a jar.
Rocky top, youll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.
Now Ive had years of cramped up city life,
Trapped like a duck in a pen.
Now all I know is its a pity life
Cant be simple again.
Rocky top, youll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.
Yeah rocky top tennesee eee eee eee.

I don't know how to search YouTube, so I offer these from one of my **favorite** entertainers: Neil Diamond
– Tennessee Moon
“Hollywood don't do what it once could do.
I used to wake up and write me a song before noon.
So I packed my dusty bags one night, grabbed an old guitar,
and I caught a red-eye flight.
In search of a dream underneath the Tennessee moon,
I fell in love to an old Hank Williams tune.
Makes me wonder: is it the same moon Hank played under? … ”
– Sweet L. A. Days
” … Nobody's gonna replace
all that we shared with each other in those days,
back in those sweet L.A. days,
sweet L.A. days. …. ”
– Someone Who Believes in You
” … Say you really had a Hollywood contract
and your face upon a big billboard, … ”
– Mountains of Love
” … Someday, make your way down the coast of South Africa.
There you will say
they're in need of a mountain of love.
Sail away, and you reach all the way down to China. … ”
– Kentucky Woman
” … Kentucky woman
If she get to know you
She goin' to own you
Kentucky woman … ”
– I Am .. I Said
” … Well I'm New York City born and raised
But nowadays, I'm lost between two shores
L.A.'s fine, but it ain't home
New York's home, but it ain't mine no more … ”
– Coldwater Morning
… don't know about this one. I don't know if Coldwater is a person or a town …
– Brooklyn Roads
” … As I stood by my window
And I looked out of those
Brooklyn roads … ”
– Blue Highway
” … Think I'll take a swing down south, visit Tennessee.
See if that girl Annie still remembers me. … ”
– America
I know this probably doesn't count, but still ….
” … On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America …”
I'd love to add “Sweet Caroline” but for that last letter ….
And then there's Roger Miller in “Kansas City Star” and, oh my, the great Jimmy Buffett:
– He Went to Paris
– Margaritaville (yes, this counts! Many of us have been there … )
– Come Monday
” … Goin' down to San Francisco, … Labor Day weekend..”
and many more, but my brain is fried and I need to leave for work. Thanks, Rhonda, for giving some of us a pleasant trip down memory lane!

“The Vast Spoils Of America”
There's something sweet about seeing the world
There's something great about Kansas
It's like staring across an ocean
Like seeing the first stars burn white
Through the swamp and trees of Southern night
Oh, I'll always have those mornings in
California where the mountains climb so tall
And waves crash blue around you
When everyone's passed out in the van
And I'm the one driving through the land
Alone in open roading
Ted's out in the seat right next to me
He's drooling on his sleeve
Who ever made up open skies and two of the bluest eyes
Must be some young phenom
Sometimes taking off can open up your eyes
To everything that lies in your heart
'Cause that's when you miss your home
And the trees seem a little deader
I think we're getting back tonight
Would you care if I came over?
I've missed you about three weeks now
I'm dying just to taste your lips
Could we stomp around your back yard
And wreck our clothes in the mud?

Dire Straits › “Sultans Of Swing”
You get a shiver in the dark
Its been raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you dont see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth london town
You check out guitar george he knows all the chords
Mind hes strictly rhythm he doesnt want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And harry doesnt mind if he doesnt make the scene
Hes got a daytime job hes doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for friday night
With the sultans with the sultans of swing
And a crowd of young boys theyre fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They dont give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It aint what they call rock and roll
And the sultans played creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
thank you goodnight now its time to go home
And he makes it fast with one more thing
we are the sultans of swing

Alan Jackson - “where I come from”
Sorry if this is a duplicate
Well I was rollin' wheels and shiftin' gears
'Round that Jersey Turnpike
When Barney stopped me with his gun
Ten minutes after midnight
Said sir you broke the limit in that rusty ol' truck
I don't know about that accent son
Just where do you come from
I said where I come from
It's cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch sittin'
Where I come from tryin' to make a livin'
And workin' hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Well I was south of Detroit City
I pulled in this country kitchen
To try their brand of barbecue
The sign said finger-lickin'
Well I paid the tab and the lady asked me
How'd I like my biscuit
I'll be honest with you ma'am
It ain't like mama fixed it
'Cause where I come from
It's cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch pickin'
Where I come from tryin' to make a livin'
Workin' hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
I was chasin' sun on 101
Somewhere around Ventura
I lost a universal joint and I had to use my finger
This tall lady stopped and asked
If I had plans for dinner
Said no thanks ma'am, back home
We like the girls that sing soprano
'Cause where I come from
It's cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta front porch sittin'
Where I come from tryin' to make a livin'
Workin' hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Well I was headed home on 65
Somewhere around Kentucky
The CB rang for a bobtail rig
That's rollin' on like thunder
Well I answered him and he asked me
Aren't you from out in Tulsa
No, but you might have seen me there
I just dropped a load of salsa
Where I come from it's cornbread and chicken
Where I come from a lotta back porch pickin'
Where I come from tryin' to make a livin'
Workin' hard to get to heaven
Where I come from
Where I come from
Yeah where I come from
A lotta front porch sitting
Starin' up at heaven
Where I come from
Where I come from
Tryin' to make a livin'
Tryin' to make a livin'
Oh, where I come from
Where I come from
Yeah, where I come from
Get back down there sometime
Where I come from

Vince Gill and Reba McEntire - “Oklahoma Swing”
Ther's a redhead from my hometown that loves to let her hair down
She tears my heart out when she starts to sing
She's from the right side of Red River and she's pretty as a picture
Don't you know she's this ole cowboy's dream
There's a boy from Okie City and I sure think he's pretty
But I know he's trying to steal my heart away
Oh my mama tried to warn me he's done time in California
But he'll be an Okie til his dyin' day
There's a dance we do in Oklahoma
A dnace like you've never seen
Sit back and we're gonna show ya
How to do that Oklahoma swing
Well when two Okies get together man there's nothin' they like better
Than to hold each other on a dawdust floor
Oh I love it when we're swayin' to those sweet twi fiddles playin'
Come on boy what are we waitin' for
There's a dance we do in Oklahoma
A dnace like you've never seen
Sit back and we're gonna show ya
How to do that Oklahoma swing
Yeah there's a dance we do in Oklahoma
A dnace like you've never seen
Sit back and we're gonna show ya
Yeah how to do that Oklahoma swing

Theres blood in the streets, its up to my ankles
She came
Theres blood on the streets, its up to my knee
She came
Blood on the streets in the town of chicago
She came
Blood on the rise, its following me
Think about the break of day
She came and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair
She came
Blood in the streets runs a river of sadness
She came
Blood in the streets its up to my thigh
She came
Yeah the river runs down the legs of the city
She came
The women are crying red rivers of weepin
She came into town and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair
Indians scattered on dawns highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young childs fragile eggshell mind
Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven
Blood stains the roofs and the palm trees of venice
Blood in my love in the terrible summer
Bloody red sun of phantastic l.a.
Blood streams her brain as they chop off her fingers
Blood will be born in the birth of a nation
Blood is the rose of mysterious union
Theres blood in the streets, its up to my ankles
Blood in the streets, its up to my knee
Blood in the streets in the town of chicago
Blood on the rise, its following me

Johnny Cash's I've been everywhere.
“I've Been Everywhere”
I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
“If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride.”
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, “Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!”
[Chorus:]
I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.

susie, how was your trip? Please mail or call me and tell me all about it.
rcr, I believe Autie mentioned this one close to the beginning, but it is a classic and I absolutely love it, but then anything Cash did was a winner.

Chicago - Frank Sinatra
Chicago, Chicago that toddling town
Chicago, Chicago I will show you around - I love it
Bet your bottom dollar you lose the blues in Chicago, Chicago
The town that Billy Sunday couldn't shut down
On State Street, that great street, I just want to say
They do things they don't do on Broadway
They have the time, the time of their life
I saw a man, he danced with his wife
In Chicago, Chicago my home town
Chicago, Chicago that toddlin' town
Chicago, Chicago I'll show you around - I love it
Bet your bottom dollar you lose the blues in Chicago, Chicago
The town that Billy Sunday could not shut down
On State Street, that great street, I just want to say
They do things that they never do on Broadway — say
They have the time, the time of their life
I saw a man and he danced with his wife
In Chicago, Chicago, Chicago — that's my home town
