John Lennon and Tina Turner in Concert: Just Imagine!
While watching Tina Turner strut her stuff on stage at the Sprint Center last night, I couldn't help but think what it would be like to see John Lennon and Tina Turner unite for a performance of a lifetime.
Today, Oct., 9th, 2008, John Lennon would have turned 68. Turner is 69. Although I am not aware of any concerts that the two performed together, I can't help but think their paths likely crossed at some point in their careers.
Just, "Imagine", what a joint performance between the two would be like. Lennon with his spiritual side and sharp biting wit, Tina with her animal magnatism and incredible sensuality.
Would it be possible for them to sing Turner's rendition of "Help"?
I think Lennon would have loved it as much as the crowd did.
Lennon wasn't known for his dancing skills, but I can close my eyes and imagine their two faces, almost touching, looking into each other's eyes while their voices blend in harmony. It is the stuff that good dreams are made from.
Lennon, the world hero chanting for peace and sleep- ins as a way to curb killing and " fussing and fighting , my friend", became an example of pacisism at its best the last five years of his stay-at-home-Dad life.
Tina has been a formidable force through example: pulling through against adversity created by husband, Ike Turner, who tried again and again to assert his will against her through violent means.
Yeah, I would have loved to have had a chance to see the two of them perform together. How about you? What songs would you have loved to hear them sing:
Share your favorite songs of Lennons and/or Turners.
Happy Birthday John! (To his son Sean who shares his Father's birthdate and to my nephew, Jason)
I would have loved to hear John and Tina sing, "Imagine".

Wow, Linda! You were there last night also? I thought it was interesting when her staff of dancers attempted to dance the “Tina Turner” dance during Proud Mary. They did a great job but didn't come close to her ability. No one dances like Tina!
I love “Nut Bush City Limits”. I couldn't believe how energetic she is and she looks more like 45. She is a hero for a lot of us. Glad you were one of the lucky to see her 50th reunion tour!!! :) I did love her version of “Help”.

It's unfortunate that people want to remember Ike Turner through the sole prism of Tina Turner's allegations.
Don't get me wrong - if he beat on her, that's wrong and not to be excused.
But Ike Turner wrote “Rocket 88” for goodness sakes - the first “rock n' roll” song. The man's contributions to music are staggering, and he never stopped, never sold out. I was lucky enough to see and meet him at the Jazz & Blues fest one year. It was incredible.
Check out Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm's “A Black Man's Soul” if you can. Insanely good.

I went on Oct. 1 (opening night) - thought I had died and gone to heaven. Since seeing her in concert last week, I have been telling everyone that I am channeling my 'inner Tina.' I loved her rendition of “Let's Stay Together” - sort of a Caribbean island flavor to it. I heard someone say that they hoped they had her energy at 69 - I chimed in that I hope I have her energy at 59!

Hmm… it starts out subtly, almost imperceptibly… with familiar names like John… and Tina… ( but, isn't she doing a parody of Sarah? ) … and then you realize you're fantasizing about the two of them “looking into each other's eyes… their two faces, almost touching”… and then the interracial overtones emerge… and you realize… you're gonna vote Obama!
Once you go black, there's no turning back.

duplenty, I don't think anyone is remembering Tina solely in the prism of her torture by her husband - we are remembering her ability to succeed and climb to the top in spite of it. The fact that he had some personal problems does not negate his incredible music, we agree on that. I'll check out “A Black Man's Soul”. I am not familar with it. What year did you meet him?
dspeople, I agree that I felt her concert could not have been any better - well, maybe if Lennon was actually performing with her. I was thinking last night that is would be a rather odd combination - rather like oil and water and not a great mix, but I would love to hear them sing together: songs like, “I'm Just a Jealous Guy”. I can really hear Tina's voice blasting on, “Give Peace a Chance”.
dipweed, there were videos of Mick and Tina performing running behind Tina - they certainly performed well together and have a similar animal magnetism.
tange, you are over the top creative!

tange, are you a Lennon and/or Turner fan? Name a tune - maybe, “We Don't Need Another Hero”, as a great choice for them to have sung together. Turner does an outstanding job on it! :)
I just heard from my brother today that he saw Ike and Tina in concert in Kansas City in 1970 - they were in their prime then!!! But Tina still is.

Bryan Ferry's version of, “I'm Just A Jealous Guy”, knocked my socks off. I loved the sax and his whistle. So now I'm thinking maybe Ike should have been the one to sing that song with Tina….
SMe, now what isn't a win/win in my combination with Tina and John? ;) I can't “imagine” that it wouldn't be incredible.
hitme, that would be an interesting combination to be sure, but Yoko deserves much better than a bite!
tange, I agree with your assessment. The thought of poor Yoko getting her head !!!! off makes me want to run screarming…..
Bigchops, you have that right - her dancers couldn't hold a candle to the “Tina dance”. She is unique, one of a kind, a piece of work, a true star. You are fortunate to have seen her in two concerts. Which one was better? Did she do the same songs? Have you seen her in other concerts over the years? Nut Bush City Limits is one heck of a crowd pleaser. Tell me more, huh, huh, please, please!

RM. I have always been a Lennon fan. Tina Turner too, but I never actually bought her records. She is almost like Carol King in the way you know how good she is and so (big word here) ubiqitous you never feared not being able to find a record. I'll make a point to check out some of her albums.
I just noticed a short while ago that John Lennon used Jessie Ed Davis as a guitar player on a lot of his records. He was a native american from Oklahoma who can be seen in the footnotes of many great records by the likes of Eric Clapton, Gene Clark, and Leon Russell. For this reason I'm going to go back and listen to my other records.
Thanks for the post.

Well, I would like to see the group “One Republic” at the Uptown Theatre in KC on Nov 1. They are such an incredible group. Their music is powerful. They have such a passionate, beautiful sound.
Speaking of music, I will be live in concert myself!! Yes! If you're a fan of the old country music, then I invite you to attend the Cow Creek Opry this Saturday, October 18, 2008, in Havensville, KS (located just west of Holton about 20 minutes).
