Interactive Tom Petty Song Title Game
Since Tom Petty will be appearing in concert at The Sprint Center Tuesday, July 22nd, this week's interactive game will revolve around Petty's music performed with the Hearbreakers, Traveling Wilburys, or solo work - which interestingly was always supported and usually participated in with fellow musicians from the Heartbreakers.
Thomas "Tom" Petty (who turns 58 on 10-20) hails from Gainsville, Florida - I wonder if he knows famous southern author Harry Crews? Petty became interested in rock n roll music at age eleven when he met the King himself - Elvis Presley. Who wouldn't be influenced by someone like that!
Although Petty has been nominated 18 times since 1981, it wasn't until 1989, as a member of the Traveling Wilburys, that he received his first Grammy Award.
In 1995 Petty received another Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal for, "You Don't Know How It Feels".
Petty and Jane Benyo were married for 22 years and have two daughters together. Petty is currently married to Dana York.
When Petty isn't performing in concert, writing and recording new material, or hosting his own radio show, he enjoys making special guest appearances on television shows such as: the Gary Shandling Show, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Comedy Central. He also appeared in the movie, "The Postman" with Kevin Costner.
When I asked my friend Lonelane_1 if there was anything she wanted me to include about one of her favorite performers, this is what she said,
"Wow, what can I say about Tom Petty other than how much I love his music and so many of his lyrics blow me away. I haven't been disappointed at any of the 3 live shows I've seen of his so far. Did you know several years ago his house caught fire, he escaped and he lost about everything? They ruled it arson but the case was never solved.
He has a radio show every Monday on Serius Satellite Radio that I used to be able to listen to at work. It's called "Buried Treasures" and he plays some of his favorite old songs and answers email. He melted my heart one week when he played Dylan's "Sweetheart Like You." ("What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this?") His music has just always been there for me through good and bad. His cds "Echoes" "Wildflowers" "Damn the Torpedoes" "Full Moon Fever" the soundtrack he did for the movie "She's the One"and Greatest Hits are all awesome."
Rules of the game: take the last letter from the song title posted before yours to come up with the next song title. Words such as A, The, And, may be used - or not- as you need in coming up with the title. Allow someone to post between your posts - no posting twice consecutively. Be fast, fair, and don't get upset if you are buzzed, which happens if you post a song that someone else already posted, or you aren't following the rules of the game. If one letter is used up please go on to the next letter,
Lonelane_1 (Happy Birthday!) chose this week's song, "A Face in the Crowd"
We start with a D......

No, I know that's not the name of a song, and that it won't count, but it is the name of the first album I bought at Mother Earth in Topeka in 1979/80 ish. My friend, “Rose”, and I skipped the last couple of afternoon classes from THS and walked downtown to the record store. I bought “Damn The Torpedoes” and a tee shirt that matched the album cover. I felt so cool….! I still know and love all the songs from that album.

All 3 times I've seen TP it's been at Sandstone on warm summer nights. He's played all the favorites and some great versions of rock classics like “I'm A Man.”
“Runnin' Down A Dream” is one song that truly transcends the recorded version when you hear it live. The guitars are amazing. Speaking of guitars, I was lucky enough to have good seats at those concerts and couldn't help but notice a stand on stage that held many “extra” guitars. These guys come prepared!

Ronda, I've never been to the Sprint Center but judging from the seating chart I'm guessing we've got seats the furthest away I've ever been at one of his concerts. I've thought about bringing my binoculars. We're on the upper tier. Guess my great seats luck finally ran out.
Let's hope my Google map gets us there ok 'cause I have no idea where it is.

Enjoy TP at the Sprint Center ladies. It's a pretty nice venue and the staff have all been very friendly and helpful at the three concerts I've seen there.
The only problem I had was the sound quality at one show. It was a little “tinny” when I saw Alicia Keys there in May. It may have been the set-up or the mixer board operator-but it reminded me unfavorably of the Bob Seeger concert I went to at Kemper in '96. Great performer and band, but he sounded so much better at Sandstone a few months later.
I've seen TP several times at Sandstone and once in Gainesville, FL in '79 or '80 (with .38 Special). This was not long after the “Damn the Torpedoes” album came out. It was a great show and a nominee for one of your “best concert ever” awards Ronda. TP was/is a legend in those parts, so it was pretty exciting stuff in a cool college town. TP and the Heartbreakers epitomize rock-n-roll to me.

Just take I-70 east to the I-670 junction and stay in the left lane. Keep going east on I-670 until you get to the Central St. exit. Stay in the left lane as you approach the Central St. exit because it exits on the left. Go up the ramp to the stop sign and turn left on Central. Keep going on Central until you hit either 14th or 12th (I can't remember which one-there's so many one way streets in that area). Turn right and go a few blocks to Grand. The address is 1407 Grand so it must be 14th you turn right on.
Here is a link to the Sprint Center website. http://www.sprintcenter.com/
They also give directions and show a map complete with parking garages. Parking costs about $10 in the garage at 12th & Grand. Just be sure to note the level in the parking garage as well as getting your bearings on the streets in the area when you leave the parking garage. It's light out when you go in for the show and dark when you leave. It's easy (at least for me) to get turned around in downtown KC at night. Just use Bartle Hall as a landmark. If you can find it, you're just a short distance to I-35/670, etc.
Also, if you aren't happy with your seats, check at the ticket window when you arrive. Tickets are often returned, not picked up or remain unsold (although I suspect this show is sold out). Many times I've done this and either gotten better seats than I had or got seats when I had none. There's always the obligatory scalpers as well, but I generally avoid them if possible.
Be careful and have a great time for me!
