New COE Wetland Mitigation Standards
Advertisement
Earlier this month the Corps of Engineers and EPA jointly announced new standards for wetland & stream mitigation. It's no longer enough to implement a plan. Mitigation sites have to happen within the context of watershed planning and have to provide ecologically equivalent functioning. The kicker is that across the nation wetlands are very diverse. While we know they play an important role in balancing water quality, we don't know enough about how they do what they do to simply replicate them. With a lot of time and a lot of practice, we'll get better at it but for now it's hard to see how we can easily replace an area that has been as intensively managed for wetland restoration for over 30 years as Baker Wetlands.
