Marty

I've wanted to see this Academy Award winning film of 1955 for over ten years - ever since I first heard reference to it in the wonderful QUIZ SHOW with Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro. Obviously I have a very poor memory because once I got into it I realized I had already seen it - but I just proceeded and am so glad because it's lovely. Ernest Borgnine is a dear and you just want to eat him up. This film is dated and besides the casual use of the term "dog" to refer to a less than desirable level of attractiveness, it's more heartwarming than offensive. Lots of interesting treatment of societal norms and life transitions... the portrayal of a woman of 55 as an "old lady" is snort inducing, but harmless contextually.

Although it deviated from the spirit of my project, I am glad I watched it again if only because of the GREAT SpongeBob connections. Ernest Borgnine provides the voice of Mermaid Man and SpongeBob and Patrick do a great shoutout to it in their performance in the Free Balloon Day episode with their "so what do you want to do today? I don't know, what do you want do? - I don't know, what do you want to do?" Delicious!!
