Beauty and the Beast

Not Disney's 1991 version and not the incomparable 1946 version (both of which I've seen many times) but a pure treasure -- a 1987 television film version with John Savage and Rebecca De Mornay. I almost fainted when I discovered its existence a few months ago. Savage is one of my favorite actors (I was madly in love with him in my youth) and Beauty and the Beast is one of my top three most beloved stories. Cyrano de Bergerac and the story of Ruth in the Bible are the other two.

Superficially this version is pretty cheesy compared to its more famous counterparts, but that didn't affect me one iota because I love the story so deeply. I was delighted by the nuanced differences, particularly in Beauty's family dynamics. It brings to mind commentaries and interviews that I've been privileged to hear on works like Hamlet - every portrayal brings something different to the part because it's like a many sided jewel--there's a never ending beauty as one looks at it from different angles. I'm so glad to have discovered this and highly recommend it to lovers of this wonderful story by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
