Peer Gynt

Oh my goodness... I can't spin this one. This was just wretched. I was hoping for a fabulous visual experience with a 17-year-old Charlton Heston in this 1941 "silent" film, an experimentalist film take on a classic Norwegian fable about a not-very-responsible (to say the least) individual named Peer Gynt. It was wretched. Of course all film is subjective and maybe this was high art to some, but I just barely got through it.

For one thing, this was decidely not a true silent film. That was probably the most interesting thing for me. As a fan of true silent film from the turn of the 20th century through the 1920s, this film in no way resembled the genre, except for the fact that it was a literal "silent" film. The whole thing was dialogue driven and the narrative text was exhausting to keep up with. True silent films are so expressive and so rich in visual art that intertitles were almost superfluous. Hopefully I haven't become a snob and maybe I was just a little cranky and tired for this particular viewing. But it wasn't a favorite. It was interesting, but not even remotely enthralling. Phooey.
