The making of assistance dogs

The LJWorld takes viewers through the process of how assistance dogs are trained and raised. It begins with puppy raisers, and ends at a small nonprofit in Washington, Kan.

The 'Puppy Raiser'

By Shaun Hittle · January 16, 2012 · Comment on this

Every day, Lawrence woman Nancy Giossi brings McLaren, a 2-year-old golden retriever, to work at the KU Department of Continuing Education. McLaren is the fourth dog Giossi — known as a "puppy raiser" — has raised for KSDS in Washington, Kan., where the dog will be trained to be an assistance dog. Check the LJWorld this weekend for a full feature on KSDS.
