Dave-I hope that we will see a new mural which is community-based to replace the old one, which I enjoyed many times over the past years.

It's really unfortunate this wonderful work of public art was destroyed. It would have been nice to have had enough notice to take some more photos before it disappeared. The irony of its theme, "The Guardians of the Arts," is especially poignant given the circumstances. It would be great to see a book or a website with photos of the mural through its 18-year history. It was painted the year my daughter was born and she's never known that alley (which we've walked through hundreds of times) without its being there. The year 2012 is associated with lots of inspiring themes. A new mural that captured the zeitgeist would be awesome, though I think it would be ideal if the Guardians of the Arts could reassure us that they're still vigilant and protecting.

@hoopes : i have several photos of this alley. a friend who lived nearby had me take her KU senior photos in this alley.

most pass-through spaces are simply functional. this one always warmed me up and had my imagination pulled away from my daily life. from the 2 hour lot to mass, so many residents and visitors to lawrence have seen this mural. even if it was a simple question it raised in their mind, "why is this here?" or a revelation, "that's cool", this is a somber occasion.

i hope there is another communal art project of some sort in this portal to liven up everyone's day.
