Blast drops third piece of bridge
The third in a series of scheduled blasts dropped the largest section of the Kansas River Bridge so far. The next blast is scheduled for later this month.
Crews work to fix water line break
Crews spent about seven hours Friday fixing a broken water line near Seventh and Kentucky streets. The broken line caused water to be shut off at some nearby businesses.
Cause of Thursday fire determined
The cause of a fire that damaged five units at Cedarwood Villa has been determined as accidental. The fire was started when smoking materials were improperly disposed of.
City reconsidering panhandling ban
The city is reconsidering a plan for a full ban on panhandling in downtown Lawrence. The city would most likely be tied up in costly legal fees and a first amendment lawsuit.
National Guard closes 18 armories
The Kansas National Guard announced it will close 18 of its 56 state armories. The closures will not affect the Guard's ability to respond to emergency situations.
Kids get kick out of giving
Local children shopped for presents for family members at the Holiday Shop Friday. About 200 city volunteers helped make the event possible.
Firebirds improve record with win
The Firebirds boys basketball team picked up its second victory Friday evening. The team improved to 2-0 on the season.
Free State girls drop contest
The Free State girls' basketball team fell to the Seaman Vikings. The Firebirds lost 32-35.
Morris twins facing familiar foe
The Morris twins considered signing with La Salle, KU's weekend opponent, before finally landing with the Jayhawks. The team will take on La Salle at the Sprint Center.
KU women hope to continue winning ways
The KU women's team is looking to pick up its fourth straight victory against Creighton this weekend. The Jayhawks will have to guard against the long ball.
