It's just one driveway, but city leaders hope it is also one small step towards a smoother-flowing 23rd Street.

One change would help tremendously: disallow left turns out of driveways/shopping centers. Turning east when you need to go west (or vice versa) means you'll need to get into the left turn lane at the next light and go around the block, but that is a minor inconvenience compared to the ripple-effect congestion caused by each person who insists on going left into heavy traffic. They invariably hold up everyone behind them--because god forbid the left turner would ever hug the left side and leave the right side open for those turning right, even when the drive is very wide and marked with arrows!Worst are the ones who inch out (often with the approval of airheads who wave them out into traffic) just enough to completely stop both right-bound lanes, then hover there waiting for traffic to clear in the left-bound lanes so they can complete their turn. There is a special place in hell for selfish people who knowingly stop traffic so they can make a left on a congested road, and also for the goody-two-shoes who think they're being "nice" to invite it. They ignore the 16 cars line up behind them, which are being inconvenienced for one idiot who is too impatient to turn right, then go around the block.Whenever possible, I will let someone out of a driveway if they have their right blinker on. On 23rd St, if they are signaling a left turn or not signaling at all, they can sit there until hell freezes over, IMO.Laws don't prevent all acts of stupidity--but they do provide a penalty. Those who won't do the right thing out of common decency sometimes will do it to avoid paying a ticket.
This City should have had a by-pass back in the late 70's when K-10 was upgraded to a 4 lane interstate.Don't let progress get in your way Lawrence!
Maybe the city should invent hovercars...
If you want to improve the flow of 23rd St, complete the Southern Bypass! This is a "no brainer"! Get those big 18 wheelers off of 23rd and the flow will smooth out.
