Melanie Birge is rattled. The Independence Inc. transportation provider was driving a disabled client to the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Hospital Thursday morning when she said the company van they were in was pummeled by a landscaping stone that weighed between 50 and 100 pounds.

That's what one has insurance for. Use it and get on with life. I suspect this non-profit has the money to make the repairs. They are not paying any taxes. Why is this a front page story?

Independence Inc is a very useful place, and has helped many people who otherwise would require live-in care to survive. They have had massive cuts in their government funding over the last 5 years. It used to be that their lawyer was free, and sadly this is no longer the case. It used to be that they offered many more services that no longer are available. Not to mention, the van got nailed this time. How about if it is in your car? Or while your riding a bike? Also, when it comes to insurance, you have something called a deductible. The amount you are responsible for before the insurance will take over. With an agency that has a large amount of coverage, you will probably have a few thousand in deductibles before you get covered. Let us also not forget that such things have a tendency to cause your premiums to increase as well. It also makes me wonder, in your gross callousness, whether or not you know who was responsible for this little "joke" that could easily have killed people.

The lawyer for Independence, Inc. never was free. I don't know where you got that misinformation.
