True it is harder to crack a hardened password and the longer more complex the better especially for insider attacks. However what ends up happening is users must write these passwords down and this helps defeat the purpose of having them. Key loggers and trojans pick up long or short passwords. What is needed is a biometric log in that does not require any hardware that protects against brute force attacks. It has to be practical and scalable to be useful to users. Signatures/gestures and even image pattern recognition are easier to use and more secure. Check out www.biosig-id.com
