The Declaration of Independence is an explanation of why the colonies were separating from England and is not a founding document of the United States the Constitution is the basis of law for this country and has no mention of any deity because it defined a secular nation.

Letter to the editor: Appalling words

FEMA doesn't have but 9100 employees and not all of them were in Porto Rico most were in Texas and other places. There was no truckers strike according to the Teamsters the problem was impassable roads and a shortage of drivers.Please double check before you post.

Get by without Planned Parenthood? One Texas effort stumbles

This article makes it sound like Planned Parenthood receives funding from the government and spends it to operate. Planned Parenthood does the work and then bills Medicare for the service,there is no billing for abortions since the patients pay.The Republican budget doesn't cut funding it just will not pay for the work done.

Actually Ted Cruz is a member of Congress since the Constitution defines congress as composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives. It is true however that members of the Senate are referred to as Senators and members of the house as Congressman.

Fossil hunter attempting another go at getting state fossil named

In a state where most of the people always seem to be against evolution trying to convince lawmakers to admit that fossils are real and weren't planted by the devil seems like a losing cause.

Letter: Felony required?

Let me get this straight,Kansas recognizes concealed carry permits from all states but does not recognize same sex marriage that is legal somewhere else.

One commenter writes that this is right because it is because "KS law is closer to the biblical and cultural norm of human society for thousands of years." The last time I read the Constitution there was no mention of following customs just because they were thousands of years old.

I am not 100% sure but I think that the governments reasoning can be found in the preamble....We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
The "promote the general welfare" clause is the specific thing used. There is a lot of controversy about this being a legal justification but as long as the SCOTUS doesn't rule it unconstitutional it will stand.
