More than 100 active, retired faculty, staff support Guth's "right of free speech"

2nd amendment rights aren't absolute either, though the NRA has practically made them so, and though some of the consequences of "overstepping" gun rights have been the deaths of hundreds of children. Yet, for the temerity of criticizing the NRA, Guth has already been threatened with the loss of his job, and death. I would agree that 1st amendment rights aren't absolute - they are almost absolutely gone.

Activist hopes shutdown will spark 'Occupy Congress' movement

This is one of the best things about Lawrence. It has plenty of great people willing to resist the rightward authoritarian trend that is poisoning the rest of Kansas. Go Robbo!

I'm glad so many at KU have spoken up in favor of free speech. The administration's review committee should heed this petition and reinstate Guth immediately, with a confirmation of his first amendment rights to say any damn thing he wants to as a free citizen.

Letter: Intimidation tactics

An excellent letter. It's time to stand up to the gun-toting bullies and their corrupt right-wing shills in the legislature.

Should university professors be able to say anything they want on social media?

Protecting the academic right of free speech should have been more important to KU than appeasing the legislature. Freedom of speech is at stake here, ugly or not. But I agree with the professor that the NRA has bloody hands. While I understand that you may disagree with his stance on gun control, I don't see how you can have anything but utter scorn for those policies that literally enable these mass killings.

I applaud professor Guth for his forthright opinion and feel the university was craven to censure him by placing him on leave.

Opinion: Has Obama been shamed into war?

At this point, not going through with the threatened attack would immeasurably strengthen Obama's hand diplomatically and popularly. Of course that is in comparison with yet another illegal, hypocritical, ineffective and purely murderous display of imperial hubris, for surely that is how another display of shock'n'awe will be seen throughout the world.

City to consider banning couches on porches

Considering that almost all couches sold in this country have been marinated in fire-retardants, I would think they pose no fire threat AT ALL.
