18 area students named National Merit semifinalists

National Merit Semifinalists are the top 1% scorers for their state.

That works out to about 3 people per class of 300. Having 11 of approximately 300 students means that FSHS has 3%-4% of their seniors scoring in the top 1%. Not too shabby.

Fall Book Sale canceled after inventory contaminated by bedbugs

Freezer Trailers can reach and hold temps down to -10* F, which would be even more efficient than just 0*. Wouldn't that be a reasonable option for saving most of the books? Run them through in weekly batches to ensure that they all got well below 0* and then held there for 4 days or longer.

Maybe a local trucking company (or companies) could work with them on this, as a charitable donation even?

Lied Center to host The Price is Right Live!

I was going to do this earlier this spring while we were in Branson, am so glad I didn't waste my time or money! Luckily I spoke with a woman whose mother had done the Live version in another city and had been VERY disappointed. Saved my $46 for the ticket.

This is very little like the TV show. Tickets do not assure a chance at going onstage, you have to show up several hours early to register for that in addition to buying the ticket. Those who do get called have one chance usually, for cheaper prizes than are shown on TV. The Big Wheel tops out at $250, AFTER you pay an additional $20 for a chance to spin.

Don't believe me, do an online search for the reviews--very few satisfied people. Sure hope the Lieds Center gets a major cut, otherwise this event is just a fleecing of the locals in whatever cities it happens to land.

Lawrence anti-hunger advocates worried by proposed food stamp cuts

Actually gas prices are within 10 cents of the prices 5 years ago. Check the historical charts.

But don't let the facts get in the way of your opinions.

KU student killed in crash on U.S. Highway 59

C'mon Ron, you've been around here long enough to know that LJW articles should be taken with a grain of salt...or possibly an antacid.

Gas prices approach record highs

I cry BS on this, and wish that the local reporters would actually dig for the meat of a story rather than taking the word of a single source.

If it's because of problems at refineries in Wyoming, Illinois and Indiana (as well as the Kansas one in El Dorado), why does Wyoming have some of the cheapest prices in the U.S., and why are prices overall cheaper in Indiana and most of Illinois than here?? Why does Lawrence seem to maintain some of the most expensive prices in the state, as an average running 15-20 cents above those in Topeka? Keep in mind we can all check these prices at the website run by the source quoted in this story.

Former LHS teacher named to hall of fame

It would be nice to have listed the other teachers being inducted. Maybe at the end of the story?
