Towing can chain drivers to huge fees

Wrong, that's not how it works. The $95 has to be paid to the PD records people in order to get the tow slip. The tow company that did the city contract tow will not release the car to the owner unless they have that slip. The tow company still charges the person for the towing service, storage fees, etc.

Lawrence police to get additional training on handling mental health-related calls

Not to mention the fact that LPD officers have already had training in dealing with mentally and emotionally disturbed people. Just because their training was not called "CIT" doesn't mean they don't have anything.
I find it ridiculous that police officers are expected to be therapists/psychiatrists/counselors/social workers/etc simply because all other mental health services get funding cuts.

Lawrence police to get additional training on handling mental health-related calls

It's kind of hard to verbally "de-escalate" someone who steps out of a trailer and starts shooting at cops, endangering not only the cops but anyone else downrange. CIT is not meant for that type of situation.

City leaders taking heat from public for proposed tax increases

Actually the voters voted for a 2 mill increase for the library, but city said they could do it with just the 1.7. Of course, that's not considering the added expenses to staff, outfit, and operate this new library. I love how the city always moans that revenues are flat, yet they turn away businesses like the Olive Garden that would have brought property and sales taxes, not to mention drawing in more people from neighboring areas like Baldwin and Ottawa. I guess the city was just too scared of the big bad chain restaurant and wanted to protect the local Italian restaurant Paisano's (oh wait, that restaurant started in Topeka . . .).

City leaders taking heat from public for proposed tax increases

No, it means that with the SRS services cut, those demands will now be placed on the police department. More demand on an already understaffed and overworked police force. But nice try with the faux-outrage.

Two Fort Leavenworth soldiers accused of robbing KU students at gunpoint

Except that these guys were already in jail when it happened, based on the time of Nascar's post and the time these two were arrested.

Eudora police officer goes to Joplin to help following deadly tornado

Smitty, get a life. LPD actually sent a ton of people to Greensburg over multiple weeks. Maybe they're letting some other departments have a chance to help out this time.

Jury convicts man for punching, injuring Lawrence police officer

Not to worry, since this is one of the guys that was shot while trying to rob someone, I'm sure his criminal history is flawless in the eyes of Douglas County.

Armed disturbance downtown early Saturday ends with Taser, arrest

Exactly! But I guess people think the cops have to just wait until the guy shot and/or stabbed someone before intervening? That's brilliant. Not to mention that by walking down the sidewalk on Massachusetts he was clearly within 200' of a bar--which is against the law.
