Glove stories: Kansas University baseball players talk about their first — and current — gloves

My grandfather gave the money to me for my first glove, a Diamond King fielder's model purchased at McCrory-Otasco's for seven dollars circa 1960. I still have it & I still use it when the great nephews come to visit.

Has the drought affected any of your trees?

Here's a tip, newspaper delivery person: You can't save a tree from drought after the fact. That is to say, when it's already in the form of a newspaper, putting it in a knotless plastic bag & tossing it in a puddle on the rainy driveway...

Opinion: Olympian's pursuit of track sponsorships a race worth running

If there's ever a local beer mile event, sign me up for the geezer division. I've been training for a long time & recently added the running to it.

Letter: NRA sway?

The paranoia about a supposed gun registry is laughable. The government wouldn't need a list to quash you, so what difference does it make?

Letter: Shame on us

Except no one is blaming the gun. We can, however, find blame with a system that won't consider taking even the most basic steps towards public safety.

What is your favorite poem?

There is a marvelous collection of poetry edited by Caryn Miirriam-Goldberg entitled:
"Begin Again - 150 Kansas Poems" Here are two samplings of this wonderful anthology:

We Read - by Kevin Rabas

At the Olpe Chicken House behind the glass there's a copy

of Ken Ohm's new book Ducks Across the Moon.

An old woman and her husband cane their way

to the counter, pay with cash, the bills

old and crumbled and green, and ask about the book.

The kid behind the counter, who looks like the town

quarterback, says, I didn't write it," annoyed,

"Heck, I don't know." And the old couple walks on,

go home, along the way mentioning books they do

know, and love, and read, and then slump in peace, sleep

on their La-Z-Boys, the tv snow, the books

held in their laps, the reading lamps still on.

You Look Beautiful - by William J. Harris

The husband says, You look beautiful."

Not hearing, the wife says,

"Have you seen my glasses?"

"I said, you look beautiful."

"Well, let's find my glasses

And we'll see."

Thanks, Ronda, for introducing me to this fine volume of Kansas poetry.

Roberts, Moran vote against expanded background checks in gun sales

There is no intent to create a government gun registry. The government doesn't care about that. If case you haven't noticed, the US military is the best in the world. Should some fantastical event occur wherein a coup directs it to dominate the citizenry, nobody's gonna check some data base to see who owns what kind of firepower. They're just gonna smash you & your 'Red Dawn' fantasies.
