Letter: Cars are king

Sir, just as there are disrespectful car-drivers and cyclists, so there are rash newspaper commenters. Did you read the articles in the LJW which described local initiatives to make Lawrence more bike-pedestrian friendly? My point was that American society’s dependence upon the auto will make such walk/bike initiatives very challenging, and was merely reminding those who walk/bike to be cautious, for in a collision between the car and the cyclist/pedestrian, the car will always win.

KU professor victim in fatal K-10 crash

A great loss. Alex was one of the finest persons I have ever met. He was always kind, considerate and thoughtful. A true scholar who always placed charity above any other consideration. I will miss him sorely. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

More snow on the way tonight; Lawrence schools, KU, others closed Friday

Just went outside to search for paper copy of LJW, and according to some very imperfect measurements, estimate 13.5 inches in NW Lawrence (couldn't find the paper either).

Taliban wing has captured Democratic Party

It must be hard to be a newspaper columnist and constantly come up with something worthwhile to say every couple of days. Some resort to drivel or nonsense, some dust off old columns, but the most despicable are the shills (like Cal Thomas) who will write anything to ingratiate themselves to those who hold power. His hackneyed comparisons in his recent column "Terrorists won't give up" are worthy of a Joseph Goebbels. Like so many of the other neocons in DC, this verbose chicken-hawk has never worn a uniform for a day in his life. Please LJW editor! Limit his rants to once a month.
