Sound Off: When is the first day of spring?

I didn't realize it was less work to compose and submit a letter to the newspaper than do a Google search.

City mulls policy that would crack down on landlords

This assumes the home is registered as a rental in the first place.

Lawrence Paper Company's purchase of Lenexa firm expected to add some local jobs

Sounds like more economic displacement, per Merrill.

Never heard of it. Is it downtown?

Business, property owners weigh in on downtown Lawrence issues

I'll make the trip just for Cabela's. Somehow Lawrence manages not to have a sporting goods store of any kind outside of Wal-Mart, which sells junk.

Graduates saddled with student loans may pay dearly for decades to come

City of Lawrence crews hope to smoke out where stormwater is sneaking into sewer system

Why not? I've seen the prices of those gorgeous OWL homes. Folks there have just as much money as many Alvamar residents, they just use it on different types of homes. And I don't begrudge either group that they can afford such mortgages.

City reaches tentative agreement with police and fire unions; pact provides raises through 2015

So, are they unions or not? The article waffles. Maybe the other city employees could organize or quit bellyaching. Or they could find another job if they're so dissatisfied with their pay.

Lawrence school board debates consolidation effort

There's plenty of research saying school size has no impact so for me this argument is a wash. There is no strong consensus either way among researchers. School size and classroom size are two entirely different matters which many - maybe not you - lose sight of. Regardless of how the schools got to be in their present condition, they are what they are. What's the best use of resources going forward? I don't have strong feelings either way so long as the needs of all students - not just low-SES students - are considered.
