David Alexander, Kansas University assistant professor of biology and an expert on modern animal flight, launches a model of a four-winged gliding raptor, called a microraptor, on the KU campus. Alexander, who leads a team of KU and Chinese researchers, says the model — based on fossil finds — sheds light on the origin of flight in birds. The researchers think that flight originated with animals that glided from trees, and not with animals that dwelled on the ground.
