Stephen “Jere” Dowdell stands at the site in the alley where his younger brother Rick “Tiger” Dowdell was killed in 1970 by Lawrence police. At the time, the city was experiencing race riots and anti-war demonstrations. Now a church deacon, Dowdell recalls those days when he was a member of the militant Black Power Movement. He now looks back and wishes he could have done something to help his brother avoid the tragedy that his family had to go through.
