KU to host forum on adding fluoride to drinking water

Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor required for health teeth. It is not added to the water to make it safer to drink (e.g. chorine) Fluoride is added to treat you, the tap water drinker, for a disease you may never get - tooth decay.

Like all drugs, fluoride has side effects See http://www.FluorideAction.Net/issues/...

The water supply should never be used to dose anyone with a drug without regard for individual health, age, weight, need or overdose.

Rotten diets make rotten teeth and no amount of fluoride will change that.

Fluoridation Opposition is Scientific, Respectable & Growing

More than 4,500 professionals (including 343 dentists and 538 MD’s) urge that fluoridation be stopped because fluoridation is ineffective and harmful. See statement: http://www.fluoridealert.org/research...

Most dentists are trained to use politics and not science to promote fluoridation, according to Armfield and Melbye in the Journal of the American Dental Association . The researchers write: "Studies of dentists' attitudes about water fluoridation suggest that a lack of knowledge and preparedness are barriers to discussing the topic ... more than one-half of the respondents believed they needed more information and training on the issue.

Armfield and Melbye postulate that: "Dentists' lack of self-efficacy with respect to critically evaluating scientific literature may help to explain their reluctance to promote water fluoridation in their clinical practices." Reduce their income? HA. Since fluoridation began 68 years ago, more dental schools have opened, more dental professionals have been created, fluoridated toothpaste became a multi-billion dollar international market, dental expenditures go up substantially every year.and tooth decay is BIG business YEt tooth decay is a growing problem and untreated tooth decay an epidemic forcing Americans into hospital ER rooms for dental care. Dentistry is now a luxury in America. 80% of dentists won't treat Medicaid patients, 130 Million Americans don't have dental insurance. Many with insurance can't afford dentistry's high fees.

So fluoridation has not hurt dentists' bottom line at all because fluoridation doesn't reduce tooth decay.

Opinion: Fluoridation debate fueled by junk science

First of all artificial fluoridation is based on the assumption that naturally fluoridated water is safe safe for all which it is not

There is clear evidence that small amounts of fluoride, at or near levels added to U.S. water supplies, present potential risks to the thyroid gland, according to the National Research Council's (NRC) first-ever published review of the fluoride/thyroid literature.

Fluoride, in the form of silicofluorides, injected into 2/3 of U.S. public water supplies, ostensibly to reduce tooth decay, was never safety-tested.

"Many Americans are exposed to fluoride in the ranges associated with thyroid effects, especially for people with iodine deficiency," says Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, co-author of the government-sponsored NRC report. "The recent decline in iodine intake in the U.S could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals," says Thiessen.

Common thyroid symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, fuzzy thinking, low blood pressure, fluid retention, depression, body pain, slow reflexes, and more. It's estimated that 59 million Americans have thyroid conditions.

Robert Carton, PhD, an environmental scientist who worked for over 30 years for the U.S. government including managing risk assessments on high priority toxic chemicals, says "fluoride has detrimental effects on the thyroid gland of healthy males at 3.5 mg a day. With iodine deficiency, the effect level drops to 0.7 milligrams/day for an average male.") (1.0 mg/L fluoride is in most water supplies)

Among many others, the NRC Report cites human studies which show

- fluoride concentrations in thyroids exceeding that found in other soft tissues except kidney

- an association between endemic goiter and fluoride exposure or enamel fluorosis in human populations

- fluoride adversely affects thyroid and parathyroid hormones, which affect bone health

"If you have a thyroid problem, avoiding fluoride may be a good preventive health measure for you," writes Drs' Richard and Karilee Shames in "Thyroid Power."

Scientific American quotes John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who chaired the NRC committee , "The thyroid changes do worry me."

Opinion: Fluoridation debate fueled by junk science

The NRC did NOT give fluoride a clean bill of health. Instead they revealed that fluoride can harm the thyroid and babies at levels added to public water supplies as well as those who drinks lots of water such as outdoor workers, diabetics, military, etc.

Further, " gaps in the information on fluoride prevented the committee from making
some judgments about the safety or the risks of fluoride at concentrations between 2 and 4 mg/L and below. The report makes several recommendations
for future research to fill those gaps, as well as recommendations to pursue lines of evidence on other potential health risk (e.g., endocrine effects and brain function). Recommendations include exposure assessment at the individual level rather
than the community level; population studies of moderate and severe enamel fluorosis in relation to tooth decay and to psychological, behavioral,
or social effects; studies designed to clarify the relationship between fluoride ingestion, fluoride concentration in bone, and clinical symptoms of
skeletal fluorosis; and more studies of bone fracture rates in people exposed to high concentrations of fluoride in drinking water."

Toxicologist John Doull of Kansas University, who chaired the committee, told a Scientific American writer that the thyroid effects worry him. in another interview, he said that the link to osteosarcoma needs to further be studied . So we are all unpaid guinea pigs in this ongoing experiment called fluoridation.

Several studies show that dentists are misinformed about fluoride science e.g. this study by Yoder et al http://tinyurl.com/Yoder

Using federal statistics, the West Virginia University Rural Health Research Center reports that urban US children, with more exposure to fluoridated water and dental care, have just as many cavities as less fluoridation-exposed rural children.

The researchers write: “For children’s dental health measures, it was found that fluoridation rates were not significantly related to the measures of either caries or overall condition of the teeth for urban or rural areas.”

New York City spends tens of millions of dollars annually on fluoridation. Yet NYC’s Chinese-American 2-to-11-year-olds, living in the low-income area of Manhattan’s Chinatown have much more primary tooth decay when compared to white and other minority groups nationally (NYS Dental Journal June/July 2011).

Most of NYC’s Chinese-American children are US born - 63% have primary tooth decay compared to only 38% of children in a national study.

The authors write, “This high prevalence of caries in the primary dentition is also similar to a national survey of children in mainland China, where three out of four children were found to be affected by caries in primary teeth,” averaging about 5 decayed teeth.

City commissioner unexpectedly raises issue of Lawrence drinking water fluoridation

Fluoridation Opposition is Scientific, Respectable & Growing

4,293 professionals (including 343 dentists and 538 MD’s) urge that fluoridation be stopped because fluoridation is ineffective and harmful. Statement: http://www.fluoridealert.org/research...

Dr. Yolanda Whyte, a primary care pediatrician, explains why she no longer supports water fluoridation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iu9Hz...

Armfield and Melbye postulate that: "Dentists' lack of self-efficacy with respect to critically evaluating scientific literature may help to explain their reluctance to promote water fluoridation in their clinical practices."

In 2006, a National Research Council expert panel published a fluoride report which revealed that fluoride, even at low doses added to water supplies, can be especially harmful to the thyroid gland, kidney patients, babies, seniors and people who drink high amounts of water. They also revealed critical fluoride safety studies have never been done and studies linking fluoride to cancer and lower IQ are plausible.

Thirty-six human studies now link fluoride to lowered IQ, some at levels considered safe in the US. See: http://www.fluoridealert.org/articles...

After 68 years of water fluoridation, the Centers for Disease Control reports that up to 60% of 12-15 year-olds are affected with fluoride overdose symptoms – dental fluorosis, white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. Yet, the CDC says More young kids face cavity crisis in US

Emergency rooms are flooded with people in dental pain, costing taxpayers millions of dollars, because 80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients, 130 million Americans don’t have dental insurance. Many of those with insurance can’t afford dentistry’s high out-of-pocket costs. No American is or ever was fluoride-deficient. Too many are dentist-deficient.

Recently, 33,000 Portland, Oregon petition-signers halted the ill-advised fluoridation mandate by the Portland City Commission.

Joining hundreds of communities, Windsor, Ontario, and Cairns, Australia stopped fluoridation this year. Windsor’s Mayor, who has a chemistry background, explains why he voted with the majority to stop 51 years of water fluoridation in this radio interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...
