Lawrence seniors picking up pickleball

On the origin of the name, pickleball: because the game borrowed a little bit of this and a little bit of that from various games, it reminded the family that created the game of another activity of theirs, the sport of crew. In crew, those leftover rowers who were not picked to be on any of the main boats for the race formed up a crew and rowed the "pickle boat." The newly evolving game was like that unexpected assortment of crew members on the pickle boat, so they named the game with the unexpected assortment of rules and strategies from tennis, badminton and ping pong: pickleball.
It's often said that the name came from the family dog, Pickles, but the dog Pickles came several years after the game. Pickles, the dog, was named after the game, not the other way around.

Boyd breaks out, helps KU women past TCU in Big 12 tourney opener

In a thrilling, come-from-behind effort on January 30, mirroring the men's victory over ISU a few days earlier, the KU women's team tied the game at the end of regulation and won in overtime in Allen Field House. Here's hoping they'll make it two wins out of three later today!

Pickleball gains popularity in Kansas

The game is a lot faster than you would think by watching this video; we were doing a training exercise while they were shooting, practicing soft shots at the net. It's true, we play every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 a.m. at Holcom Park and the equipiment is provided, so come on out and give it a try. You'll get some great exercise and have fun doing it! In the future, you can always find where we're playing at the national web site usapa.org under the "Places to Play" link. I keep that up to date.
