Town Talk: Question about Quiznos future; trash service streak continues; Corliss to be evaluated; Oread issues upcoming

Chad,

Is there any way you could check on the story with Scarlet Orchid? I loved their food and actually have several Restaurant.com certificates I wanted to use there, but they seem to have completely disappeared. The building is gutted, there's no sign indicating what happened, and the phone number has been disconnected.

Target your slow cooker for easy meals

FYI as of 5 PM Today (Sunday), Target is out of stock on the $34 6-quart Programmable Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker. They couldn't tell me when they'd get more in, although the customer service desk did issue me a "rain check" on the price until early November.

Quiznos Meal $2.99

Just a note: when I've used these coupons from the previous few deals, the person at the register has made me do one transaction for each coupon. They let me use the same credit card, but 2 coupons (one for me + one for other person) = 2 transactions. Not sure if this is the corporate policy, but that's what the Lawrence Quiznos has made me do. Not a big deal, just kind of silly.

Insurance fight over abortion, smoking, erectile dysfunction sent back to committee

Lawrencechick,

House rules require that amendments be germane to the subject of bills, and one legislator did ask for a ruling on the germaneness of this amendment. That ruling is made by the chair of the House Rules Committee, who happens to be the same Republican Clark Shultz who championed this very idea about insurance abortion restrictions back in January. Not too surprising that he ruled the amendment was germane.

Ah, the refreshing stench of corruption.

Lawrence Athletic Club closes east-side location

Agreed Ray. Even on a good day, 1/3 of the treadmills are out of service, and those that do "work" are often less than fully functional. One of my friends who used to work there warned me how cheap they are when I was thinking about signing up - maybe I should have listened.

Pool bars Muslim woman for ‘burquini’

Anyone who cries racism here doesn't understand French pool rules.

I lived in France for 7 months and the first time I naively put on my board shorts and tried to go swimming in a public pool, I was not allowed to enter the water because "shorts are clothing, not swimwear." Men are required to wear Speedo-type swimwear and women must wear similar one- or two-piece garments. Also, everyone is required to wear swim caps.

The French are very serious about their pools - people use them almost exclusively for lane swimming and not lounging - and their rules reflect this.

Sebelius meets with senior Obama advisers amid speculation she could be the next nominee for HHS secretary

I'd suggest no more alcohol for independent_rebel until he/she learns the difference between 'are' and 'our'.

To the cleaners

To give you a little perspective, after paying 4.5 Euros per wash load (which is about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a standard US wash load) at the only laundromat in my town here in France, every single homeless-person infested laundromat in Lawrence looks like heaven to me.Although I do remember my first experience with an off-campus Lawrence laundromat - 9th & Illinois in Lawrence. There was a drunk homeless man with the worst case of eye disease I've ever seen (his eye was LEAKING puss) who was accosting everyone there, eventually leading to another drunk homeless guy fighting him and the police being called. Should have taken the veteran roomie's advice and never been there after dark...

Obama reverses Bush ban on international abortion funds

Good lord anti-choice nuts are drama queens. "War on the womb?" Really?I don't suppose any of you actually bothered to find that the 1961 Foreign Assistance Act, which is still in place, prohibits money given by USAID to be used, "to pay for the performance of abortions as a method of family planning, or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions."The Mexico City Policy was never necessary, because USAID money was never funding abortions. Instead, it was an attempt by Reagan to force an ideology as a precondition for aid. Under the Mexico City Policy, if an NGO so much as lobbied a country for legalized abortion in the case of life-threatening emergency, it was immediately cut off from any USAID funding. Again, Mexico City Policy never has, and never will have anything to do with funding abortions. Stupidity cloaked as morality, and sipped like grape KoolAid by the Religious Right.

Defining marriage

Yeah baby, let's get Biblical on marriage! Shamelessly stolen from HuffPost, who in turn shamelessly stole it from DailyKos: A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5) B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21) C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21) D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30) E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9) F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10) G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)
