City commissioner wants review of city's storm shelter policies in wake of Oklahoma tornado

I had a friend who bought a home in south OP from a builder, that had a shelter of some sort built in under the front door, step up, door stoop / porch .

It was a simple simple extension of the basement concrete walls poured as a room that had the front door stoop poured over it .....& all parts were connected by steel reinforcing bars, as foundation walls are normally done & mostly below ground, save for the step up stoop top of it .

Was it built well.......not really !

The door to this complete concrete room was a hollow core interior wooden door ...leave it to a builder to do the dumbest..... whatever's ? !

None of the walls were lined with anything to catch spalled concrete.......I.e., drop a 5,000 lb. pick up truck on the outside of that concrete box & roof at 100 mph+ ( up to 300 mph+ in an F-5 ) and small missiles of concrete would probably shoot off of the inside of that concrete wall / roof, at anyone inside !

So cover up as you can inside of an all concrete room . A helmet, pillows or a mattress might still be very very smart !

Yes, there is such a thing as ballistic rated drywall like product that is heavy to handle and not cheap . Yes, I have heard of the idea of using a sheet metal liner to catch flying concrete chips inside of an all concrete room or bunker that might score a massive hit like a heavy vehicle impacting it .

I also don't believe that he had any kind of dropped down handle, emergency pull levered type, 1/4 turn-to turn off, gas valve on his gas line inside of that homes' basements outside edge ! ( a not uncommon building feature, in earth quake prone areas )

Makes sense to be able to shut off gas and electric from the inside if you have time to, if you are on the glide path of an f-5, as we all saw the pictures of the burning homes in Moore, OK .

A safe room would be a bad place to be cooked alive & the fire dept might not get there for a long time, for obvious reasons !

House Republican leaders propose 1.5 percent cut to higher education for each of next two fiscal years

With around two million people in the Greater KC Area, KU MED KCK = plenty of KU Med patients & a potentially great market for KU MED grads to settle into as doctors .

With around 630,000 in Wichita = they need a med school, to replace retiring doctors with grads who want to stay when their schooling is finished .

But a KU State Run Medical School in Salina ? .......with a populace of 48,000,........ on a good day ? HUMMMMM?

I suppose that if you put non removable shock collars on all of the KUMED students in Salina and jolted them every time that they approached the city limits to attempt to leave, that a few of them might even stay there after their med school was over ?

Did I hear little piggies squeezing about wasteful state spending,.....again ?

City commissioner wants state to revoke nightclub's liquor license

Maybe the City of Lawrence & the State of Kansas should consider a total ban on free food and beverage events, at licensed bars in this City & State ?

Hate to see the good who party responsibly suffer for the bad apples..... but these things seem to attract armed riffraff, who got nothing better to do with their lives than shooting each other in what sounds like, on the visual sighting of each other mobile gun fights that spread out from wherever they get started .

Who is paying for the Police, the Jail, the Courts, the Medical Costs of this all ?

Where did the guns involved originate from ( stolen or bought somewhere ) and did any of these idiots have their back rounds looked into before they acquired these guns that were involved, if these we legally purchased ?

This is an attempted murder ! This can't be allowed to become the norm !......or worse than that........murders that will sooner or later, succeed .

Legislature makes no progress; Brownback leaves state to tout tax cuts

Has anyone noticed a pattern here ?

In the US Senate while Bush was running this country aground, financially .

Shows up here and does the same tax hockus pockus as went on in the Bush Era in Washington, D.C. .

Obviously, he is still expecting the same results that Bush was expecting & the wise know where that one went !!!

Like Bush, Brownie found a choir to pitch it to .

Since his audience is starting to wake up to reality, he is now off to find the next group of suckers who can't seem to see the future tax shifting, coming soon to a theater near themselves .

Gee,.....free food and beverages.......maybe they should invite the Ks House, Senate and Brownie.....or how about the head of the NRA ?

Could we could put them all in patrol cars at McDonald's ?

Be interested to know of the guns origins ? Stolen from a careless Kansas legal gun owner and resold to a shooter ? Bought legally at a no check Kansas gun show by a shooter ? Hummmm ?

Maybe it was made out of state by Commies and smuggled (?) across the Ks boarders by illegal aliens from outer space !

Were their any off duty federal officers working security at the club ? After all, they could be arrested for disarming a shooter in Kansas ( isn't it against a federal law, in general, to shoot other people in an attempted murder in the USA ? )

Some part of me would like to believe that Mr Baileys statements were truthful, honest, ...and reflective of, a truly remorseful person,..... because that is in line with the world that i would like to live in, where people are capable of remorse, as opposed to sociopaths, who can mimic remorse, when it suits their purposes .

Which is the truth.......a remorseful soul......or a sociopath,..... at center stage ?

I assume that God knows which and will deal with it, as It wishes to, in It's own time , .....and that I can get used to being uncertain about something, that is not life and death important ( immediately ) to anybody that I know .

Meth sounds like a misery drug, I.e., such a great high, that the rest off your life will be sheer misery hell, by comparison, to being high on Meth......... and for practical purposes, devoid of all other daily pleasures, that sane people normally experience .

Tell your children and friends not to be fooled by the dealers who sell that stuff.

There is nothing cool going on there.... but an opening into the gates of a life, that is hell on earth for everyone that it touches .

Knology changes its name to WOW!; lifts usage caps on Internet service

The real story to me is how much debt (?) that WOW owes ( if any ), for buying KNOLOGY ?

If there is debt created to purchase KNOLOGY ( along with any existing debts, from the last purchase, of it's own self ), then it all just gets built up & passed on to the customer, one way or the other in the rate or service available for the rates asked !

I think that cable customers are sitting ducks, unable to dodge the next resell of our providers and the debt that a new buyer takes on or the cost to themselves of buying it on their own dime which become the dime of others .

It would be nice if cable providers had to hold onto these things for a while instead of playing the flip it game with them for the next fast buck !

As city prepares to bid recreation center, officials still waiting to receive cost numbers from Fritzel on infrastructure

Running into hidden or unseen-unnoticed or unstudied buried rock ledges in the middle of laying water mains, sewers..... for either sanitary sewers or parking catch basin drainage lines could get expensive .

Also sounds as if the city needs to provide Fritzel with engineering specifications for the infrastructure to be built, so Fritzel can speak to the costs of that bill.

I am not of the belief that you sign a check with your good faith credit...... and hand it to a builder to fill out as they so choose ( sounds like great work....if you can get it )

The assumption that "giving all of the infrastructure work to one party, will keep the costs down", is just an assumption.....no more....no less .

An 18 month old child does not make a witness, at all,....so why did he kill the kid ?

Blessed are those who are merciful to children.......and self cursed are those who show no mercy to a helpless child, who was no real threat to themselves nor any part of creating any adult issues going on between adults .

Whatever happens to this person who did this in the future, he has earned his reward .

Tax cuts for the Kochs and all of the LLCs ( and their not liable for any damages caused by our company,.... ownerships ) How does that spell correction of the problem, when the money is not there to do it ?
