Who should be responsible for paying the majority of a student's cost for driver's education?

Back when I as a lad, you didn't need a license to drive - you just saddled your own horse and rode the thirty miles to school, uphill both ways, often with my kid sister, through the snow, even in July. Unless, of course the horse was lame, in that case I had to carry my kid sister. And her science project. And if she had a sleep over...

Religion column causes stir

I always assumed when the players knelt down in the endzone, they were thanking God that neither they, nor anyone else got hurt in the play. And as far as God painting the Pearly Gates Blue and Red at the start of the season, the word is that true to Jayhawk tradition, the colors "ran" and turned into a beautiful royal purple. But that is just what I heard...

Lecompton mobile home a 'total loss' after fire; no one injured

I live nearby and checked at the scene, as well as with the Trailer Park manager - no one was at home, no one was hurt.

Area Football Roundup: Eudora falls in shootout

What a shame that the Eudora coach, Greg Webb, sets such a poor unsportsmanlike attitude for his players. His words after losing to the Perry-Lecompton Kaws, "We just beat the snot out of them," show such a disrespect for other teams that I'm ashamed of him. And his words were pathetically inaccurate to boot. According to his own scoreboard, the Perry-Lecompton Kaws won the game 41-33. That's not getting the snot beat out of them, is it?Perhaps more telling was how the Kaws played together as a team, not simply depending on one (admittedly highly talented) player to get the job done. Perhaps if the Eudora team got past their coach's unsportsmanlike attitude they might really go to greatness.Sour grapes, Coach Webb, sour grapes. Boos and hisses to you.

Palin: Hot or Not

And you all don't think that Obama, Bite'em, Hilly, and Bill didn't use speech writers and teleprompters? How naive.

Palin: Hot or Not

WOW!!! What a difference there is between the Kansas City Star, and the LJWorld. The Star has a pretty much balanced bunch of demolibs and Republicons. Here it is little more than liberal, bleeding-heart, demofascists.I love how the dems have got their backs all up over Gov. Palin's speech. They say she doesn't address education, war, health care, etc. No wonder they hate her - she addresses her own agenda, not that of Dems. Besides, they all got that deep-in-the-gut feeling that she's gonna kick their collective posteriors.Palin is a breath offresh air. She's Republican, but not part of the good old boy system. She has definite ideas about what she's going to change, not just puffed up, grandiose claims to change (without any substance) like Obama has. She is confident, competent, and ready to go to work. My greatest fear is that if Obama wins (getting pretty unlikely), he's gonna sit in the office on day one, spin around in his chair, play with the intercom, and say, "whadda I do now?"It's amazing the difference between the Democratic approach to candidates and that of the Republicans. The dems choose a popular candidate who sounds magnificent in front of a teleprompter, then back him up with a VP candidate whose experience just might provide the substance needed, while the Republicans elect a Pres. candidate who has al the expeience necessary, the willingness to buck the system, then they provide him with a VP candidate whose fresh ideas, intelligence, and abilities will complement the Pres., and add to the "arsenal."Democratic ticket = flambuoyance, smoke and mirrors, and wishful thinkingRepublican ticket = established competence, concrete ideas, and depth of talent

Do you think the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18, in an effort to curb binge drinking?

The bottom line is that 18 year olds are NOT mature enough to handle drinking responsibly! Period. The argument that they are old enough to fight in the armed services has no bearing - it is like comparing pansies to turnips and deciding which has the better gas mileage. Meaningless. One has nothing to do with the other and the result of the argument is idiocy. Perhaps they ought to have the right, but it all still boils down to 18 year olds not having the maturity. It is a simple fact of human development. And I'm not all that sure about 21 year olds either.....The real issue here is that the KU chancelors and the athletic department all want the drinking age lowered so Penthouse magazine can come back out and rate KU the number one party school again, which will (arguably) raise enrollment, which will mean more money for KU and the athletics gods. And stop with all the idiotic nonsense about how it would be OK if it was only for 3.2 beer because they wouldn't get as drunk. Bull Hockey!!! When I was in my first year (back when the drinking age was 18) in college (K-State, thank goodness) I got just as plastered on 3.2 beer in Aggieville as on anything else. And no, I didn't have the sense enough to know when to stop, either. 18 is still too young, no matter what little Johnny or little Susie think or say.And forget bout the clinical terms such as "binge drinking." The bottom line is that they all go out planning on getting wasted. Why sanitize it by giving it a clinical name? Call it what it is. You all who use terms like that are doing nothing but shifting the responsibility away from what your insipid little brats are doing, and making it seem like they are not really responsible for what they are doing. They go out, get wasted, act stupidly, get hurt or jump off of porch roofs, and it is plain and simple THEIR OWN FAULT. But you want shift the blame on someone else. And you want to make it easier for them to get their hands on the stuff? Shame on you!
